The Polar Bears travelled to Capital University Wednesday afternoon for a much anticipated OAC match. The Crusaders entered the match with only one in region loss and 1-0 in OAC play. Not only was this a big conference match, but a big in region match between two very good teams. ONU got on the score board midway through the first half when Senior Jamie Eiben found fellow Senior Angie Pisut for the game opening goal. Eiben received the ball in front of the Capital back line, held off a defender, turned, and played a fantastic ball to Pisut who took a touch and buried her shot for the first goal. ONU dominated a majority of the play in the first half, creating several great scoring chances. ONU went into the half up by a goal. The second half, Capital threw everything they had at ONU, creating some corners and some scoring chances. The Crusaders were able to get a goal back and tied the game at 1-1. That goal woke ONU up and they marched right back down the field, scoring off a corner only minutes after the game equalizer by Capital. Senior Tri Captain Kaitlin Sanders found fellow Senior Captain Stacey Barnhart for the game winner.
The game was physical, fast, and filled with emotion. "Capital is a very good team," said head coach Mark Batman. "They play with a lot of emotion and I'm very proud of our team for dealing with the pressure and direct style of play, especially in the second half. We have a great group of players, and they showed a lot of character today. When we got scored on, it almost woke us up, and we decided to end the game by getting the second goal. It was a great result in the OAC for us, but just as important, a great in region result for us."
ONU is back in action on Saturday as they travel to Mt. Union College for a 2p kickoff in Alliance. Thanks to all who attended the match yesterday; we appreciate your continued support of ONU Women's Soccer.
