The Ohio Northern University women's soccer team wasted no time placing them in a great position to win the ONU Women's Soccer Classic on Friday by defeating Kalamazoo College 4-1. Angie Pisut, 4th year Pharmacy student, opened the scoring by beating the Kalamazoo goal keeper to a through pass just outside the penalty area. The scoring didn't stop, as Jamie Eiben, Kim McGowan, and Senior Stacey Barnhart all found the back of the net. On Saturday, ONU faced a very disciplined team from Calvin College, currently ranked #17 in the country. ONU gave up an early goal just a few minutes into the match. A second goal was scored off a clearance attempt in the penalty area, which was credited as an own goal. ONU ended the first half down two goals. The Polar Bears came out blazing in the second half, creating quite a few great scoring chances until a penalty kick was called against them. Calvin scored on the questionable call, making the score 3-0. ONU kept fighting, creating several other chances but couldn't muster a goal.
ONU is now 2-1 on the season and are back in action this weekend when they travel to DePauw to play in their weekend tournament. ONU will face DePauw Friday night at 7p and then face Centre College on Saturday at 5p. Centre is the team who just inched ahead of ONU last season for the final NCAA at large bid to the NCAA National Tournament.
"This past weekend was a great weekend of soccer", said head coach Mark Batman. "All four teams could easily go on to post season play this year. It was great to play top notch teams who tested us and exposed the areas we still need to work on. I'm confident the team will not let this one loss affect them for the remainder of the non-conference schedule."
This coming weekend will be another great weekend of soccer. Thank you to all who came to support us in Ada on Friday and Saturday. We hope to see you all in Greencastle, IN this weekend! GO BEARS!
