This past weekend found the Polar Bears traveling down to Westerville, Ohio for the Otterbein Tournament which featured hosts Otterbein University, a well as St. Mary's College, and Kalamazoo College. The polar bears opening game, and first road game of the season, was against the Kalamazoo Hornets on Friday. K'Zoo provided a tough match up for the polar bears as much of the game saw both teams creating chances. With the game tied at zero at the half, the polar bears looked to start the second half with new intensity. Stepping up across the board, the polar bears picked up the pressure on the hornets defense. In the 58th, freshman Abbie Schauble connected off a cross from Senior Chelsea Albert to net her third goal of the season and the game winner. Junior keeper Kristen DeWees also made four saves to earn the shutout and the first road win for the polar bears.
The weekend continued for ONU with Saturday's contest against St. Mary's (Ind). The polar bears wasted no time by jumping on the scoreboard in the third minute with an unassisted goal from freshman Sami Atkinson. The polar bears continued the to pressure the Belles, out shooting them with 12 shots in the first half. Atkinson would also make her mark early in the second half with another unassisted goal. Strong play from the entire polar bear squad continued throughout the remainder of the game and held the shot advantage to 32-5. The afternoon wasn't over for Atkinson as she completed her first collegiate hat trick in the 53rd minute off of the corner from junior Alyssa Merrick. Keeper Kristen DeWees and an impressive ONU defense sealed the win earning the second shutout of the season. Upon the close of the weekend, ONU improved their record to 3-1-0. The polar bears return to action at home against regional foe Wittenberg, Wednesday at 5pm.
