ONU Women Win and Tie at DePauw Classic

The Ohio Northern University Polar Bears improved to a 3-1-1 record this past weekend when they traveled to DePauw University to participate in the DePauw Classic. ONU played Depauw on Friday evening at 7:30pm. After a rusty first half from not playing for a week, the Polar Bears pounded DePauw with 12 unanswered shots in the second half and both over time periods but couldn't find the back of the net. After 110 minutes of action, the match ended 0-0. "That was one of the best games we have played all season" said Head Coach Mark Batman. "The girls knew the first half would be rough after their first week of classes and taking a week off of playing, but they adjusted to the atmosphere and worked their tails off for each other and deserved to win the game."
ONU then played Centre College, who was ranked #3 in the Great Lakes Region in the latest NSCAA Coach's Poll. Senior Angie Pisut got the goal scoring started just a few minutes into the match off an assist from Freshman Alicia Palivoda. The game would be played mostly in the middle of the field, as neither team were allowing the other many scoring opportunities. ONU didn't find the net again until late in the second half when Piust received a ball inside the box, beat her defender, and slotted home her second goal of the match. The assist came from fellow senior Jamie Eiben and Sophomore Chelsea Chadwick. Eiben held off two defenders and slipped a wide pass to Chadwick as she made her overlapping run from the back. Chadwick then found Pisut and she didn't miss, making it look too easy. "What a great weekend of soccer. I really felt the girls deserved to come out of the weekend 2-0 but I am extremely happy with our progression as a team at this point in the young season. Everyone contributed this weekend. The girls showed a lot of character to battle through two very tough teams. When you can hold a great team like Centre to only 2 shots and none on goal for 90 minutes, that's a great defensive team effort. Not allowing any goals from DePauw again shows you how committed this team is to make their mark this year. I'm very proud of them and am excited to play a tough Wittenberg team on Wednesday."
Thanks to all who made the trip to Greencastle this weekend. Your continued support of ONU Women's Soccer is greatly appreciated. We have another tough week this week when we travel to play non conference rival Wittenberg on Wednesday at 5p and host Hope College this Saturday at 4:30p in Ada, OH.
