ONU Takes Down MSJ 6-1
An onslaught of 5 goals in the second half lifted the Ohio Northern Women's Soccer team past a very tough team from the College of Mt. St. Joseph. ONU went up 1-0 late in the first half when Senior Tri-Captain Stacey Barnhart converted a penalty kick. ONU wasted no time setting the tone for the second half, as Junior Natalie White scored just 40 seconds into the second period. It was all down hill after that with 4 other Polar Bears contributing to the score, making the final count 6-1. ONU gave up a lone goal midway through the second half. A MSJ player took a 30 yard shot, Freshman GK Erin Waehner made a fantastic diving save, just getting enough on the ball to push it into the far post, but unfortunately the ball bounced back and struck the young keeper in the back and went in.
"The second half was a great display of what this team is capable of", said Head Coach Mark Batman. "The team had some great chances in the first half to open the game up as two goals were called back for off sides. I thought they timed their runs perfectly, so it was probably too close, which is why they were called back! The team showed a lot of character, made some great adjustments, and took the game to MSJ for the second half. If we continue to play like that, we are going to be a very tough team to beat in the weeks to come."
The Polar Bears are now 5-1-2 and head to Case Western Reserve this Saturday. Case is having a great season under Head Coach Tiffany Crooks and it will be another tough opponent before finishing up our non conference schedule with Denison at home next week. Thanks to all who continue to support ONU Women's Soccer!
