Each season a select few of student athletes are highlighted for their accomplishments and are interviewed in an installment of "Chillin' With A Polar Bear." Last fall, senior Chelsea Chadwick was chosen to talk about her experiences as a polar bear both on and off the field. Chelsea, the 2011 OAC Defender of the Year, is a great ambassador of the ONU soccer program and a wonderful representation of each player in our program. Take a look and enjoy!

Women's Soccer Team Recognized

Recently the Women's Soccer team was honored at halftime of the Women's Basketball game vs. Capital. Each member of the 2011 team made their way to center court to be recognized for their tremendous team accomplishments from the past season. Fellow student athletes, professors, parents, and fans all showed their appreciation as the team's awards, honors and records were read aloud to the crowd. The support of the ONU community did not go unnoticed during the fall season and it continues to be a source of pride not only for women's soccer but for every sport on campus. Thank you for your continued support of ONU Women's Soccer and ONU athletics!

2012 NSCAA All America Ceremony

Last weekend marked another highlight in celebrating the 2011 season as the NSCAA Convention and All America Awards Ceremony was held in Kansas City. For the second time in as many years, the Ohio Northern University women’s soccer program was awarded an NSCAA All American. Junior Captain Tara Tokar was honored to receive both 2011 NSCAA All America Award and NSCAA Academic All America Award. The ONU women's soccer staff, along with Tara's parents were able to be there with Tara alongside the other youth, high school, and collegiate Athletic and Scholar All Americas. Tara had this to say about her experience, "I was incredibly honored to be able to represent Ohio Northern Women's Soccer at the NSCAA Convention. I'm sure ONU was an unfamiliar school to hear for most players and coaches at the Convention, so it was exciting to be able to get our program the recognition we deserved." The ceremony, yet again, proved to be a special occasion for everyone in attendance as US Soccer President, Sunil Gulati was given an honorary All America Award. Former MLS standout and current MLS commentator Taylor Twellman was there to congratulate each award winner. “Just being an All American, either academic or athletic, is difficult enough, but to be awarded both is a true testament to Tara as well as our entire program. She would be the first one to tell you she couldn’t have done it without her teammates. She is definitely deserving of the honor and I’m very proud of her. I know she is extremely honored and humbled to accept this award. She’s a great representative of ONU Women’s Soccer”, said Head Coach Mark Batman. Congratulations again to Tara for her tremendous accomplishments and for being a great representation of all of our student athletes!

End Of The Season Banquet

The 2011 end of the season banquet is always a highlight for our current players and families. As we looked back on the record breaking 2011 season which saw a 15 game unbeaten streak, Coach Batman's 100th win, and our first NCAA Tournament win, there were plenty of things for us to celebrate.

Special recognition was given to the senior class of Chelsea Chadwick, Kristen DeWees, Kim McGowan, Alyssa Merrick and Christina Spinaris, who finished up their ONU careers as the winningest class in program history with an overall record of 58-20-6 and an exceptional Ohio Athletic Conference record of 31-3-2.

Individual honors were also handed out which were voted on by the team. Senior Alyssa Merrick earned the Team MVP for her efforts this season. Merrick finished the season with 7 goals and 13 assists for a total of 27 points. Earning Most Valuable Offensive player for the 2011 season was Sami Atkinson. For her contributions to the ONU back line, Chelsea Chadwick was voted as Most Valuable Defensive player. Newcomer of the Year was given to Kristina Klusek who was named second team All OAC and finished her freshman year tied for first in the OAC with 12 goals on the season. Awards given by the coaching staff were also handed out at the banquet. Receiving the Most Improved award was sophomore Lauryn Zielinski who earned her first goal in the OAC season finale at Marietta. Senior tri-captain Kristen DeWees received the Coaches Award for her tremendous efforts on and off the field. DeWees was a 2010 and 2011 team captain and has also received All OAC and All Region honors while in goal for the Polar Bears. In addition to these awards, the Goal of the Year was voted on by those in attendance. Kristina Klusek brought home this award for her NCAA overtime goal vs. Scranton. Overall, the banquet was a great way to reflect on the past season, to honor accomplishments, and give thanks to everyone who contributed to a 2011 season which was full of memories and highlights.

Polar Bears Earn Regional and National Recognition!

Even though the 2011 run has ended, the team continues to be honored for their tremendous season. The NSCAA recently named three ONU Women’s Soccer players to the All Great Lakes Regional team. Junior Tara Tokar earned her second consecutive All Region honor being named to the NSCAA All Great Lakes Region First Team. The tri-captain was previously honored this year with first team All OAC as well as Academic All OAC recognition.

Joining Tokar on the first team is sophomore Sami Atkinson. This is the first All Region award for Atkinson, who led the OAC in points and goals scored. Sami was also awarded first team All OAC and second team Academic All District earlier this season. Atkinson had this to say about this honor “It feels awesome to be recognized as an all region player. I know that it is a real honor. I couldn’t have done it without my teammates and coaches. We all push each other in practice and support each other in games and it resulted in such a memorable season!”

Also receiving All Region honors is senior tri-captain Chelsea Chadwick. The 2011 OAC Defender of the Year earned her first All Region honor being named second team All Great Lakes region. “We had an amazing team this year that pushed each other hard every day and grew very close. I couldn’t have asked for a better senior season because of the girls and our coaches,” said Chadwick. Rounding out the All Region recognition for the Polar Bears is head coach Mark Batman as he was honored as Great Lakes Regional Coach of the Year by the NSCAA.

Tokar was additionally named to the 2011 Division III NSCAA All America Team. “As honored as I am to receive these awards, they more importantly reflect our successful season as a team. I definitely feel that more of my teammates deserved similar recognition, but it was great to see our program finally earn some much-deserved respect regionally and nationally. I'm very excited to see how our program will continue to build off this successful season next year, as we aspire to set new standards for ONU Women's Soccer.” This is the first time Tokar has received recognition on the national level and only the second time that a Polar Bear has earned All America honors. Coach Batman had this to say about all the awards, “These girls are all very deserving of their accomplishments. They have been fantastic for us. Seeing Chelsea finally get recognized at this level is really special. She was a great teammate, player, and leader. I think all the awards are a tremendous reflection of our entire team. They are a fun, energetic, and competitive group, always wanting more. Getting a 2nd All American in as many seasons is really special and I feel we have other players who can accomplish this goal before their time is up with us as well. It’s a great individual accomplishment and great representation of our kids.”

Post Season Honors

The accolades of the Ohio Northern Women's Soccer team continue to pile up as the Ohio Athletic Conference has announced that five Polar Bear players are represented on the 2011 OAC Academic All Conference Team.
Senior Alyssa Merrick, along with Junior teammates Tara Tokar and Paige Garber have been incluced on the OAC First Team while Senior Christina Spinaris and Junior Nicole Grant have been named to the Honorable Mention Team.
Merrick, a Business major, is appearing for the first time on this list while Tokar and Garber, both in the College of Pharmacy, are making their second appearance. Garber was also named to the CoSida Academic All District Team maintaining a grade point average of 3.77 in Pharmacy. Spinaris, Pharmacy, and Grant, Biology, are making their first appearance on the All Academic OAC list.
"These are great awards for our players", says Head Coach Mark Batman. "Often times we forget how competitive these girls are off the field. They are all smarter than me! It really shows how hard they work to maintain the challenges of balancing an extremely difficlt atheltic and academic load. I'm really proud of these girls for representing our program and what they have accomplished as individuals in the classroom. I think all of our players should be represented on this list, as our team gpa from this past fall was just under a 3.5. It's a great testament to the type of student-athlete we have at ONU."

2011 Season Comes To An End

All good things must come to an end and the season end has come for ONU Women's Soccer. Despite controlling the tempo and outshooting their opponent by almost double, the Polar Bears record breaking season came to an end on Sunday. On a blustery Sunday in Ada, the Polar Bears took on the Bombers from Ithaca College in the second round of the NCAA tournament. With their sites on their first trip to the NCAA Sweet 16, Northern began the match with relentless pressure on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. While stingy defensive pressure allowed the Bombers just a single shot in the first half, the Polar Bears took 11 shots and created many dangerous scoring opportunities. Solid goalkeeping from Ithaca and a few unfortunate hits off the post and crossbar kept the scoreline at zero for the Polar Bears. Northern took their momentum from the first half and continued to apply pressure to the entire Ithaca squad in the second half despite having the wind now at a disadvantage. The ONU attack continued to keep the Bombers on their heels as the Polar Bears still found scoring chances in the Ithaca defensive half. However, in the 57th minute Ithaca managed to capitalize on one of their offensive runs to get on the scoreboard. With a "never say die" mentality the Polar Bears continued to search for the equalizer until the final seconds ticked off the game clock. With the loss, Northern ends their season with an overall record of 16-3-2. In what was truly memorable season full of highlights, program firsts and memories ONU Women's soccer has much to be proud of in 2011.

“This season was a fantastic and steady effort from every member of our program,” said head coach Mark Batman. “All season we preach team defense and how important it is, and I felt we’ve played very well this season. We knew all season we would create scoring chances, but team defense keeps you in games and wins tournament games. Our girls really played well this past weekend and it’s a great cap off to the careers of our seniors. I know losses like this are extremely difficult, but I told the team they should be proud of their teammates, themselves, and all of their accomplishments from this past year. It’s been a fantastic ride and it’s unfortunate that it ended, especially when we know and feel we could and should be playing this week.”

The ONU seniors have accomplished so much in their careers: 4 trips to the OAC Tournament, an OAC Championship, 2 trips to the NCAA National Tournament, a team G.P.A. above 3.25 each season, a European adventure, some great memories and moments to last a lifetime. They’ve really helped ONU soccer get on the national map and have set the standard for future Polar Bears to compete and win championships.
Thank you seniors for all you have given to our program. You’ll never be replaced, only remembered! See you all next fall for another exciting season of ONU W Soccer.

ONU Onto the Next Round of NCAA's!

The Polar Bears have advanced onto the second round of the NCAA Tournament! Northern earned their first ever NCAA tournament win by defeating The University of Scranton 1-0. It was a great atmosphere for soccer in Ada and the game did not disappoint. Both teams battled 90 minutes and more to keep their seasons alive. The regulation period ended in a stalemate with Northern taking the edge in shots. Great team defense and some early key saves from Erin Waehner kept the Royals at bay. The Polar Bears were able to gain momentum as the final 45 worn down with some dangerous scoring chances created by Alyssa Merrick and Kristina Klusek that just missed the back of the net. With renewed energy to find the game winner, the Polar Bears picked up where they left of in regulation and pressed the Royals in the first overtime period. With minutes to go in overtime Abbie Schauble and Fran Federle battled in the midfield to win the ball, Schauble played a ball into Sami Atkinson who sent a long lofted cross to the back post. Waiting for the incoming ball was Kristina Klusek who took the ball on the full volley and ripped it into the Scranton net for the win. With the win, the Polar Bears return to action tomorrow as they take on Ithaca College. Ithaca beat Illinois Wesleyan in overtime to advance on to Sunday's match. Kick off in Ada will be at 1pm.

Great Day To Be A Polar Bear!

The ONU Women's Soccer team received an at large bid to the 2011 NCAA Tournament! This marks the second time in three seasons that Northern has made it to the "Big Dance!" To make the deal even sweeter, for the first time in program history ONU will be hosting for the first and second round games! The Tournament will kick off at ONU this Saturday when ONU hosts the University of Scranton at 11am. The second match of the day features Illinois Wesleyan University vs. Ithaca College which kicks off at 1:30pm. The winners of both games will face each other at 1pm on Sunday.

In other exciting news, 8 Polar Bears were awarded with OAC honors and 3 received academic all district honors. Senior Chelsea Chadwick was honored as the OAC Defender of the Year. This marks the first conference award for the Tri-Captain! Also receiving first team honors are Alyssa Merrick, Tri-Captain Tara Tokar and Sami Atkinson. Merrick and Atkinson collected double honors as both were selected to the "Second Team Capital One Academic All-District 7" team by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Abbie Schauble and Kristina Klusek collected their first OAC awards as both were named Second Team All OAC. Honorable Mentions also went out to Paige Garber and Erin Waehner; Waehner was an Honorable Mention honoree last year as well. Garber also joins Merrick and Atkinson on the "Second Team Capital One Academic All-District 7" team.

Northern Falters in the OAC Semi Final

Ohio Northern dropped the OAC Semi Final yesterday at home to John Carroll University. With the loss, the Polar Bears now stand at 15-2-2 overall while the Blue Streaks move on to play Capital for the OAC Tournament title on Sunday.

Solid play from both sides created a stalemate of a first half as neither team was able to find the back of the net. A strong defensive showing from the Polar Bears with Erin Waehner in goal kept the Blue Streaks at bay for the first 45. After a scoreless first half, both teams came out of halftime hungry for a goal and the chance to move onto the final. Northern seemed to have the edge in momentum as the ONU attack kept the Blue Streaks on their toes for the entire half. However, in the 78th minute John Carroll converted a free kick just outside the ONU box after a foul was called in their favor. This would be the only dangerous opportunity allowed by the Northern defense but it was enough to give JCU a goal and the lead. The Polar Bears responded strongly for the remaining minutes by testing the JCU keeper but the best opportunity would come off a shot by Alyssa Merrick which was cleared just off the JCU line with 2 minutes to go. Despite a 7-2 advantage in corners and out shooting JCU in the half the Polar Bears were unable to find the equalizer. With the loss, Northern now looks for the chance to receive an at large bid to continue their season in the NCAA Tournament.

Northern Goes 9-0 in the OAC!

For the first time in program history, the Polar Bears completed the OAC regular season with a perfect 9-0 record. The win at Marietta College was the 11th consecutive win for ONU and improved our record to 15-1-2 overall. With the intent to mark a program first, Northern wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard. In the 5th minute Sami Atkinson would take a flicked on header from Lauren Brown to her feet, she would turn the corner on her defender and fire a shot into the Pioneer net for the first goal of the afternoon. Atkinson would also score the second goal, her 12th of the season, in the 28th minute off of an assist from Kristin Klusek. The ONU defense, with Erin Waehner in goal, would only allow a single shot from the Pioneers in the first half. The Polar Bears continued their pressure in the second half and in the 50th minute Lauryn Zielinski would earn her first goal of the season, and career, off of a fantastic corner from Senior Alyssa Merrick. Set pieces would continue to be dangerous for Northern as just 3 minutes later Tara Tokar would get on the end of another Merrick corner; this would mark Merrick's OAC leading 13th assist of the season. Northern would continue to press as each Polar Bear that stepped on the field kept up the tempo and pressure on the Pioneers. Sara Rutherford would finish off the scoring after converting a free kick sent in by Paige Garber to alse earn her first goal of the season and career. Kristen DeWees and the Northern defense would preserve the clean sheet in the second half. ONU would take the 5-0 win by allowing only 3 shots from the Pioneers and firing 27 of their own. Having already booked a ticket to the Semi Final, Northern awaits the result of the Quarter Final match between Baldwin Wallace and John Carroll which takes place Tuesday. The Semi Final which will be hosted at ONU is slated for a 2pm kick off this Thursday.

Polar Bears Win the OAC!

The Ohio Northern Women's Soccer Team clinched the OAC regular season championship on Wednesday as they defeated Heidelberg 4-0 in Ada. This is the first regular season championship since 2007 for the Polar Bears! ONU has remained unbeaten in the OAC with an 8-0 record and improved their overall record to 14-1-2. With the win the bears locked in a first round bye for the OAC tournament. ONU will await the winner of the first quarterfinal match between team 4 and team 5 held on Tuesday. ONU will host the winner of the Tuesday match on Thursday at 2p for the first OAC Tournament Semi Final.

Knowing that a win solidified their place atop the the OAC, Northern wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard. In the 3rd minute Abbie Schauble received a throw in from Alyssa Merrick and sent her long driven shot past the Heidelberg GK. This would be Schauble's 3rd goal of the season. Shortly after, in the 6th minute, Merrick would score one of her own after placing a header neatly into the goal off of a great run and a cross from Sophomore Sami Atkinson. The duo would link up again with the roles reversed as Merrick would send in a bent ball in behind the Heidelberg back line for Atkinson to finish. Atkinson placed the ball into the far side netting to earn her 10th goal and Merricks 12th assist of the year. Just 10 minutes later, Merrick finished off the scoring for day after a solid build of play from Tara Tokar, Sami Atkinson and Lauren Brown. Merrick would finish the day with 2 goals and 2 assists. The second half was much like the first with Northern controlling the tempo of the game. Many Polar bears saw action in the second half but solid goal keeping from Heidelberg kept the scoreline at 4-0. The Northern defense would allow only 2 shots on goal as Erin Waehner and Kristen DeWees earned the shutout. This Saturday, ONU travels to Marietta for their final game of the OAC regular season at 1pm. The Bears are hoping to be the first team in the history of they program to tally a 9-0 conference record.

ONU Wins at JCU on Senior Night

The Polar Bears increased their points in the OAC with a 2-1 win at John Carroll University on Friday night. "JCU is a great team", said Head Coach Mark Batman. "We knew they would have something a little extra tonight for Senior Night and a home game for them under the lights. They are definitely a top team in our Conference. Their team put us under pressure late in both halves and our girls weathered the storm both times well. Overall it was a great match for us in preparation for the upcoming week and the OAC Tournament."

The majority of the opening half was controlled by ONU, creating some very close chances to get up a goal or two early. JCU did a great job defensively and then put ONU under pressure with just a few minutes left in the first half. ONU's Erin Waehner had to make a crucial save to keep the score at 0-0 going into halftime. The start of the second half was very similar to the first. ONU created some great chances and Freshman Kristina Klusek would find the back of the net on an unassisted goal just a few minutes into the second half. ONU's second goal came from some great soccer presence, movement, and skill. Sani Atkinson found Abbie Schauble, who then found Alyssa Merrick inside the penalty area. Merrick took a touch and fired her shot past the JCU keeper making the score 2-0. JCU would get a goal back from a miscleared opportunity from the ONU defense off a JCU free kick. JCU pressured the Polar Bears for the final 10 minutes of the match, but were unable to get the tying goal. Waehner would have to make a few saves late in the match to keep ONU in the lead and the ONU defense cleared a few dangerous balls, not allowing JCU the second goal.

ONU is now 13-1-2 overall and 7-0 in OAC play. Up next is Heidelberg at home on Wednesday at 4p. Thank you to all who made the trip to Cleveland on the cold and wet night to watch a great OAC game! See you all this week!

Polar Bears Take The Win Against Wilmington!

Ohio Northern preserved their unbeaten record in the OAC after defeating the visitors from Wilmington College. ONU improves to 6-0 in the OAC and 12-1-2 overall. Despite the rainy conditions both teams started the match looking to gain the edge. Even though the ONU attack was able to penetrate the Quaker back line the Polar Bears were unable to find a goal, just missing three very close chances to put them ahead. In goal, Erin Waehner was called upon early to make some key saves for the Polar Bears but as the half wore on the Northern defense stepped up and shut down the Quaker attack. Both teams went into the half scoreless but Northern had the edge on shots at 12-6. As the second half began, ONU picked up where they left off as they controlled much of the tempo of the game. The ONU midfield, made up of Tara Tokar, Abbie Schauble, and Lauren Brown, were instrumental in the Polar Bear's control of the match. Tara Tokar would also have a hand in the first goal as she would play a ball out of the air to Sami Atkinson in the 67th minute. Atkinson took Tokar’s pass, beat her defender and then beat the Quaker goal keepr from just inside the penalty area. The goal marked Atkinson's 9th goal of the season. Atkinson would continue to cause problems for Wilmington and with less than 10 minutes to go she would earn a penalty kick after being taken down in the box. Senior Alyssa Merrick would convert the penalty to finish off the scoring at 2-0. With the win, the Northern defense earned their 5th straight and 8th overall shutout of the season. Up next, ONU travels to University Heights to take on John Carroll Friday night in a much anticipated OAC match up.

ONU Celebrates Senior Day With A Win!

One goal in each half was enough to lift the Polar Bears over the visiting Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace. With the win ONU remains undefeated in the OAC at 5-0 and 11-1-2 overall. Saturday also marked Senior Day for Northern as all 5 seniors were honored before the game for their commitment and dedication to the ONU program. To mark the occasion, Senior Tri-Captain Chelsea Chadwick got on the scoreboard in the 16th minute. After receiving a pass from Kristina Klusek, Chadwick would earn her first goal of the season by dribbling toward the endline, cutting back to lose her defender and sending a shot into the lower near post. Despite taking the lead, The Yellow Jackets would press hard to find an equalizer and nearly found one on a breakaway but defender Paige Garber would make a crucial well timed tackle to preserve the Northern lead. For the remainder of the half each team battled the Ada wind to gain control of the game but the score would remain. The Polar Bears regained their focus during halftime and started the second half with renewed energy. Less than 5 minutes into the half Northern would earn a corner kick. In a heads up play, Senior Alyssa Merrick played a quick short ball to Abbie Schauble who sent in a shot toward the BW goal. Schauble's shot caught the Yellow Jacket defense off guard as it snuck just under the cross bar for Schauble's second goal of the season. This would also give Merrick her 10th assist of the season to lead the OAC. The Northern defense, with Waehner in goal, would preserve the scoreline and earn their fourth straight shutout of the season. Up next, Northern continues OAC play as they host the Wilmington Quakers on Tuesday for a 4pm kick off.

ONU Takes Sole Possession of 1st Place!

On a wet and chilly afternoon in Westerville, OH, ONU took sole possession of first place in the OAC with a 3-0 win at Otterbein University. The Polar Bears are now 4-0 in the OAC while Otterbein drops its first OAC loss leaving them in 2nd place at 3-1. The matchup between these two teams has always been a great soccer game to be a part of. A game filled with emotion from both teams, great soccer with great individual players from each team, and we know it’s going to be a battle for 90 minutes. Unfortunately, we have been on the losing end of the most recent matches with Otterbein until yesterday afternoon. The team was eager to avenge the regular season double overtime loss from last season as well as the overtime loss in the conference tournament from 2010.

Much of the first half was played in the middle 1/3 of the field as both teams battled to gain momentum. Each team had their chances to get on the scoreboard but a goal was not to be found in the first half. After the half and with renewed energy, the Polar Bears wasted no time in making their mark as Freshman Kristina Klusek placed a composed finish in the back of the Cardinal net less than 30 second into the half. Klusek found herself in the Otterbein penalty area, beat a defender, beat the gk who came off her line, and then placed her first goal over a defender covering for the gk in goal. Northern seemed to gain the momentum from there on but the Cardinals were quick to step up the pressure. However, ONU would answer back in the 73rd minute as Senior Alyssa Merrick would find Klusek just outside of the 18 to send in her second goal of the afternoon. The duo would link up again to finish off the game just 3 minutes later as Klusek would find the far upper corner about 20 yards from goal to earn her first collegiate hat trick. Overall, the entire Northern squad would put on a solid display on both the attacking and defensive fronts. The Polar Bear back line and keeper Erin Waehner would earn the fifth shutout of the year and third straight against some very tough competition. Up next, ONU returns home to host Baldwin Wallace this Saturday to celebrate Senior Day.

Northern Capitalizes Against The Crusaders

The Polar Bears move to 3-0 in the OAC after earning a 1-0 win against the Capital Crusaders last Saturday. Thanks to an early goal from Tara Tokar off of a free kick from Alyssa Merrick the bears were able to get their 9th win of the season. The game, which was the second match of the day for ONU soccer as the Men's team also beat Capital earlier in the day, was a battle between two teams with a ton of history between them. Both teams fought for the entire 90 minutes but Tokar's goal would prove to be the difference maker. The Capital keeper would make some key saves to keep the scoreline at 1 despite some dangerous scoring opportunities from the Polar Bear offense. Northern would hold the edge on shots with 13 to the Crusader's 4. The ONU defense with Waehner in goal would earn their 4th shutout of the 2011 season. Up next, the Polar Bears travel to Westerville to take on OAC rival Otterbein in what is sure to be an exciting match up between two undefeated teams in the OAC.

ONU 2-0 Over Manchester College

On a sunny afternoon in Ada, the ONU Polar Bears out shot Manchester College 27-0 in 90 minutes of play. Manchester's stingy defense didn't allow too many scoring chances and their goal keeper came up with some great saves in the first half, trying to keep the score at 0-0. Eventually ONU's Sami Atkinson would break through the back line off a great no look pass from Senior Alyssa Merrick making the score 1-0 going into the half.
The second half would start much like the first with ONU controlling the tempo and Manchester's defense would hold strong until the 88th minute when Freshman Sandra Thorarensen took a ball off the foot of a Manchester defender and notched home the second goal of the match, making the final 2-0.
"This was a solid, non conference, performance from the players today", said head coach Mark Batman. "We created a lot of really dangerous chances, hitting the crossbar as well as several other shots just missing wide or over, and that's very promising and tells me the girls remained hungry for the entire match. More impressive is that defensively we didn't allow a single shot in 90 minutes. This game was also a good experience for the girls against a difficult and stingy defensive team. We are looking forward to hosting Capital on Saturday and our annual Kicks for a Cause event. The next few weeks of the OAC are the fun weeks of conference play and I believe our girls are ready for the excitement that surrounds this part of our season."
With the win, the Polar Bears improve to 8-1-2 overall and still remain 2-0 in OAC play as well as undefeated in the Great Lakes Region. In the most recent NSCAA rankings, the Polar Bears remained at #3 in the Great Lakes Region but have moved up to #21 in the national rankings.

ONU Wins On The Road!

The Polar Bears won their seventh match after they defeated the Purple Raiders of Mount Union last Saturday in Alliance. This marks the second OAC win for ONU in as many matches as their record now stands at 7-1-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference. Again, the Bears got off to a hot start in the 6th minute when Sami Atkinson got on the end of a ball played by Alyssa Merrick. This would be the first of two goals scored by Atkinson and assisted by Merrick on the day. The duo would link up again for the second goal of the afternoon just 10 minutes after the first. Not to be outdone, Kristina Klusek would get herself on the score sheet off of an unassisted goal in the 23rd minute. Klusek and Atkinson are now tied at 7 goals a piece for the season. Also joining the scoreline was Sandra Thorarensen with just over 5 minutes to go in the half to get her third goal of the season. ONU would continue to control the tempo of the game in the second half. However, the Purple Raiders would give their fans something to cheer about after they converted a free kick in the 56th minute. The Polar Bears would out shoot Mount Union with 18 shots while the ONU defense would only allow 2 shots for the entire match. Up next, the Polar Bears host Manchester on Tuesday in their last non conference match of the season.

ONU Over Mt. St. Joseph

The Ohio Northern Women's soccer team wasted no time in getting started yesterday with a goal from Kristina Klusek in the third minute of the match. Lauren Brown found Klusek behind the MSJ defense and she notched her sixth goal of the season. ONU's second goal came from Junior Captain Tara Tokar, making this her first goal of the 2011 season. Tokar took a ball off an MSJ midfielder, beat two players, and slid a calm shot into the far side netting from 18 yards out making the score 2-0. ONU would go into the break up by two goals, only allowing 2 shots from MSJ in the first 45 minutes of play. The second half was very similar to the first. ONU's third goal came from Klusek off assits from Freshman Sandra Thorarensen and Senior Alyssa Merrick. MSJ would find a glimmer of hope when they got a goal back in the 62nd minute, but ONU would quickly respond when Sandra Thorarensen got her second goal of the 2011 season. ONU held MSJ to just four total shots while creating 23 of their own.
"This was a great non conference win for us", said Head Coach Mark Batman. "The girls did a very good job adjusting to the field conditions from all the rain we have had in the past few days. We played very well on both sides of the ball. I felt we were efficient in the final third of the field, creating dangerous chances for a lot of the game and we defended very well as a team. We are now looking forward to Mt. Union on Saturday who will be a very tough OAC opponent."
The Polar Bears are now 6-1-2 overall, 1-0-0 in OAC play, and 6-0-1 in regional play. Their next match is this Saturday at 1p in Alliance, OH v Mt. Union.

ONU Opens OAC With a Win!

The ONU Polar Bears opened up conference play when they hosted Muskingum College last Saturday. It began as a foggy morning in Ada but turned out to be a great day for ONU soccer. Saturday also celebrated Parent's Day for the Polar Bears as the players and staff gave their appreciation to the family members that support our team every day! We do have the best parents and fans in the OAC!

The Bears wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard as Kristina Klusek would connect with Sami Atkinson in the 3rd minute to notch Atkinson's 5th goal of the season. ONU would control the tempo for the majority of the first half and would continue to test the Musky back line. In the 19th minute, Freshman Sandra Thorarensen would send a ball into Senior Alyssa Merrick who turned and sent a shot just under the crossbar. This would be Merrick's 3rd goal of the season and Thorarensen's first assist of her collegiate career. The Bears would continue to press as Atkinson would assist a great goal by Sophomore Lauren Brown. This was Brown's first goal of the year in the 28th minute; the goal would be the last one of the half for the Polar Bears. The second half mirrored the first as much of the game was controlled by the orange and black. ONU would find the net for the final time of the game in the 49th minute as Thorarensen would get on the end of a loose ball in the box to score her first goal of the season. Both Atkinson and Thorarensen would finish the day with a goal and an assist to help the bears to a 1-0 conference record and a 5-1-2 overall record. ONU’s defense held the Muskingum offense to just three shots over 90 minutes. Head Coach Mark Batman’s thoughts on the OAC opener, “Muskingum was certainly not an easy opponent. They fight, like all the other OAC teams do. I felt we played very well and didn’t allow anything easy for them offensively, while creating a lot of great scoring chances for ourselves. Today was a great start for our conference season and we are looking to build from this match. It was great to get everyone some much deserved minutes and experience on the field today. The experience the players gain in these games is crucial for our development as a team if we want to win this conference. We have two tough games next week which we will now place our focus on.” Up next ONU hosts Mount St. Joseph in a non conference match up this Wednesday.

Northern Takes the Tie Against The Big Red

Yesterday ONU hosted the Big Red of Denison University in great regional match up. Both teams entered Tuesday's match ranked within the Great Lakes region and the game did not disappoint. Both teams had some great scoring opportunities early in the game. Junior Erin Waehner made some key saves in the first half to keep the scoreline at zeros. Northern's closest scoring chance came off a corner kick, but Sophomore Sandy Plunkett’s header just missed wide of the Denison goal. Both teams would keep battling in the midfield for much of the second half. ONU had chances to take the lead as Sami Atkinson and Kristina Klusek were able to sneak in behind the Denison defense but couldn’t put one passed the Denison gk. The game went into double overtime and the score would end 0-0. "That was probably one of the best teams we've played this year and I think it was a fair result for us," head coach Mark Batman comments. "It was a good game on both sides. Both teams had their opportunities. The game could have gone either way for us. Regardless, it is a good result against a very good team.” With the tie, ONU takes a 4-1-2 record into Saturday's OAC opener v Muskingum College at 1p in Ada, OH. Saturday's match up will also celebrate Parent's Day as the team and staff will show their appreciation for all that the parents and family members do for our team.

ONU Topples Thomas More!

The Bears returned home last Saturday to take on the Saints of Thomas More after a 4 game road spell. This was another big regional match up for ONU and the bears were eager to get to work. Both teams would battle each other in what was a physical and scrappy first half. Both teams would create dangerous scoring chances but it would be the Bears that were the first to jump on the scoreboard. In the 31st minute Freshman Kristina Klusek would settle a clearance from Junior defender Paige Garber. Klusek would then turn out, take her defender to the end line and serve a well placed cross to an on rushing Abbie Schauble. This would be Schauble's first goal of the season and Klusek's first assist of the season. The bears would take their lead into halftime but the second half would begin just as the first with both teams pressing hard for a goal. With just under 20 minutes to go the bears would find the net again. Senior Kim McGowan would take advantage of a missed Saints clearance to place a through ball to Sami Atkinson. Atkinson's touch was just enough to beat the Thomas More goal keeper as she would score her fourth goal of the season. The Saints would notch one on the scoreboard with less than a minute to go in regulation but the bears would come away with the win. Goalkeeper Erin Waehner would make 4 saves on the day to get the win. ONU now stands at 4-1-1 and looks to take on another tough regional opponent on Tuesday as they host Denison.

ONU Tops Wittenberg 3-1

Yesterday evening the ONU Women's Soccer team went into Springfield, OH and took on a very tough Wittenberg University team. Wittenberg was coming off a great win v the #9 team in the country, IL Wesleyan. This match was a great in region win for the Polar Bears, coming away with a 3-1 result.
The Polar Bears got off to a quick start, notching a goal in the opening minutes of play after a few very good chances. Sami Atkinson walked away from the match with her second career hat trick and first three goals of the 2011 season. "She's been working so hard to get that first goal" said Head Coach Mark Batman. "I just told her to not worry so much about scoring goals and just make a difference for us each time she's on the field, if you do that, goals will happen." That's exactly what happened as she took an early pass from Abbie Schauble behind the Wittenberg back line and scored the breakaway opportunity, giving ONU the 1-0 lead. ONU would take that lead into halftime after Wittenberg really pressed for an equalizer late in the half.
Just moments into the second half, Atkinson combined with Schauble again for her second goal of the game, making the score 2-0. Wittenberg would strike back on a bouncing ball in the penalty area and get a goal of their own. ONU would then seal the game when Atkinson took a pass from teammate Alyssa Merrick at the top of the Wittenberg penalty area. Atkinson spun her defender and laced a ball past the Wittenberg gk for her third goal of the night.
Thoughts from Head Coach Mark Batman, "This was a great win for the girls tonight. They really did well and I'm very proud of them coming here and getting this result. We keep telling them that this is a process and to not get caught up on results, if we continue to grow, the results will come naturally. Making the trip last weekend certainly helped us tonight but we know we have a tough road ahead with Thomas More on Saturday and then Denison on Wednesday. Both are teams who could potentially be playing in November in the NCAA's."
The Polar Bears are back in action on Saturday at 1p as they take on Thomas More College who won the PAC in 2010.

Engineering Cup

Last weekend the Polar Bears traveled east to compete in the 2011 Engineering Cup hosted by Stevens Institute of Technology. The bears hit the road last week and despite some tricky navigating through the Pennsylvania hills they arrived in Hoboken ready to roll. After a training session at the Stevens campus the bears set off for downtown Hoboken for a delicious dinner and of course a stop at Carlo's Cake Shop, home of the "Cake Boss!" After a fun evening of relaxing the night was capped off by a great view of the Manhattan skyline from the top of the Stevens campus. On Saturday ONU took on their first match against New York University. The Polar bears got off to a great start with a goal in the 5th minute from Freshman Kristina Klusek off an assist from Sophomore Abbie Schauble. However NYU would find the equalizer before the half off of a free kick just outside the 18. In the second half ONU would continue to press hard to find the go ahead goal but it was not meant to be. Instead NYU would score in the 78th minute to take the lead and again in the 87th minute after a questionable no call from the officials. In all the Polar Bears would out shoot the Violets but the bears took their first loss of the season. “I thought we played well for most of the game,” added Head Coach Mark Batman. “We created some great moments in the game and NYU is a very tough opponent. We controlled the tempo for most of the match and unfortunate we couldn’t capitalize on our chances in the final 1/3. I know we can play better and be more efficient. As soon as some of our other players start to contribute offensively, we are going to be a very tough team to beat.”

ONU would return to action on Sunday to take on tournament hosts Stevens Institute of Technology. Before kickoff both teams would participate in a moment of silence to honor the 10th anniversary of September 11th. Each team in the tournament also wore red bandanas in honor of NCAA athlete and 9/11 hero Welles Crowther.
Despite creating dangerous scoring opportunities from the start, the Ducks would jump on the scoreboard first in the 12th minute. Stevens would take their lead into the half but it would not last long as Kristina Klusek would put the Polar Bears on the board just a few minutes into the second half. This would be Klusek's second goal of the tournament and her fourth of the season. Sophomore Lauren Brown would be credited with the assist. ONU’s second goal came from Senior Alyssa Merrick. Fellow senior Chelsea Chadwick found Merrick in front of the Stevens back line, she turned, beat a player, and beat the Stevens goal keeper from 25 yards out. With just over 10 minutes to go in regulation the Ducks would fight their way back into the game to score the equalizer and force overtime. The Polar Bears had a golden opportunity taken away early in the second overtime after Sophomore Sami Atkinson was taken down in the box on a breakaway (see clip) but no call was given. The game would end in a tie, but ONU would take the edge in PK's to round out the tournament. Overall ONU would out shoot Stevens 21 to 15. “Our players played really well and deserved better results on both days of the tournament,” head coach Mark Batman said. “But I am really happy with our progress from this weekend. We now have to look forward to a big in region week for us. The past two games were great preparation for the turf at Wittenberg and our home match v Thomas More on Saturday. I’m excited to move on from this weekend and see some great matches this week.”
The Bears remain as a top team in the region in the latest NSCAA poll and will return to action this Wednesday when they travel to take on regional opponent Wittenberg.

Season Openers!

What a start for the 2011 Polar Bears! Last week the ONU Women's soccer team kicked off their season with a 3-2 win over the College of Wooster and a dramatic 1-0 overtime win over Earlham!

The great opening day atmosphere got even sweeter when Freshman Kristina Klusek got the Bears on the scoreboard in the 22nd minute when her quick touch was just enough to chip the keeper and find the net. Despite putting on a strong defensive front for the entire first half The Scots would find an equalizer before halftime. With renewed energy and determination ONU would step up the pressure on the Scots in the second half. The Bears would take the lead in the 55th minute after Senior Alyssa Merrick's shot from outside the 18 would find the opposite side netting. With the lead back in hand ONU would continue to create dangerous scoring chances in the Wooster half. However, again the Scots would find the equalizer after being awarded a penalty in the 83rd minute. Not content with a tie, the Polar Bears would press forward and in the 85th minute Freshman Kristina Klusek would get on the end of a pass from Sophomore Sami Atkinson for the game winner. Junior Erin Weahner would get the win in the net while the ONU defense would allow only 4 shots on goal. Thoughts from Coach Batman, “I think we deserved the win today. We had quite a few great scoring chances and I felt we really played well defensively, only allowing a few chances. The girls played fantastic in the heat and did well against a very good team and defending NCAC Champions. I’m very happy for the girls and now look forward to Saturday against a solid Earlham soccer team.”

On Saturday, ONU would take to the road to travel to Earlham for their second game of the season. The 1pm kickoff would take place in the hot Indiana afternoon but the weather was no factor for the Polar bears as they took control from the start. Despite recording 6 shots on goal and many other dangerous scoring opportunities, ONU was unable to find the back of the net and took the scoreless tie into the half. The second half would continue the solid performance from the Bears as again they would post 6 shots while allowing only 2 shots from the Quakers. Regulation time would end and ONU would head into their first overtime of the season. Again the Bears would stifle any scoring chances from the Quakers as they kept up the pressure on all fronts. Finally with just under a minute to go in the first overtime, Sophomore Sami Atkinson would take on her defender, turn the corner and play a ball across the goal line for her classmate Sandy Plunkett to stuff in the back of the net. Plunkett's first goal of the season would give the Polar Bears the win and a 2-0 start to the season. “What a tremendous effort from our team,” said head coach Mark Batman. “On the road, playing a tough defensive team, and dealing with the heat, our players showed what kind of character they have. I’m excited to be a part of this group and really proud of their efforts today. We knew fatigue may be an issue after a tough match on Thursday, but they came here and played hard and adapted to the weather, field, and fans. It was a great result for us and a great start for our season.”

Up next, the Polar Bears travel east to take part in the Engineering Cup hosted by Stevens Institute of Technology. On Saturday September 10th, the Bears take on NYU and on Sunday they play tournament host Stevens.

Pre season closing thoughts

With pre season coming to a close and our first regular season match approaching here are a few thoughts from our captains on preseason and the road that lies ahead for ONU Women's Soccer.

#2, Senior, Chelsea Chadwick
"I am very excited for this soccer season due to the fact that we have many experienced and talented girls who each bring something special to the team and on the field. This preseason is going well because we have such a competitive group of girls who are pushing each other hard in practice to prepare for our upcoming season."

#12, Junior, Tara Tokar
"Even before we came on campus for our report date I've been extremely excited for this season. With a few girls coming back from injuries and the addition of our very talented incoming class, I'm very hopeful for a successful season to come. The girls have been full of energy throughout our preseason training sessions and even more so when we're getting closer to real games. Our team chemistry I think is the best it's ever been and we've definitely already made some hilarious memories! I'm confident that everyone will be working hard for each other...we're just ready to go!!!"

"Although this year’s pre-season was short (due to the semester change) it was still very productive and encouraging. With many of the players being returners and just a handful of first year players, we have a great group with A LOT of talent, all looking for minutes. What separates this group from others is the hunger and competitive drive. Every practice players are out on the field giving their 100%, which I can only imagine makes it difficult for the coaching staff! I know that we're excited to start playing outside competition to see how we do. This is our year. We are the team, this is the time!"

Pre Season Peek

The first week of preseason 2011 for ONU Women's soccer has come and gone. Last week was a great first week of training and preparation for our second and final week of preseason. The new players to the ONU family were able to get acclimated to the expectations of ONU soccer for the fall. It was a great week for everyone to come together as a united team for the 2011 campaign. We are on the right track in our preparation efforts for our home opening match on September 1st against the College of Wooster.

In between the team meetings and training sessions of preseason the team and staff managed to fit in some fun. Here are just a couple clips from the "friendly" competitions over the last week. Stay tuned to the blog for more insights into the 2011 season!

2011 Season Preview!

Our 2011 preseason will kick off next week with 24 players returning along with 7 new faces joining the Polar Bear family. Preseason is always a great opportunity for the team to come together before the school year begins. We are looking forward to getting everyone back on campus to prepare for the long season ahead! Once preseason wraps up, our first test will come on September 1st as we host NCAC champions the College of Wooster. Throughout September we will play some of the best teams in our region in order to prepare us for another run at the Ohio Athletic Conference championship in October. We are also making a trip in September to the east coast to take on NYU and Stevens Institute of Technology at the Engineering Cup in Hoboken, NJ. Our September schedule is one of the toughest in the region and should make for some competitive and exciting ONU Women’s soccer highlights!

Once October hits, we begin to turn our focus on our conference opponents. With a conference championship in mind every year we look forward to beginning the OAC schedule this year with Muskingum College. There is a ton of history and emotion built up in every OAC match up and we look forward to each game every season. Our regular season wraps up at the end of October with Marietta College in Marietta, OH. Our group has high expectations and look to make their fifth consecutive appearance in the OAC Tournament Final. We have a very promising, determined and hungry group who are excited and eager to make their mark on our conference, regional and national opponents. Summer Events!

While the students have gone for the summer, ONU Women's Soccer is still busy with a few special events. Just this past weekend the 2nd Annual ONU High School Residential Camp took place on campus. The program played host to 20 high school aged soccer players from in and out of the state. From Friday through Sunday the camp participants received technical and tactical field sessions in addition to classroom sessions; all of which were ran by the ONU coaching staff and current ONU team members. Sessions included topics such as "Speed of Play" and "How You Can Be a Better Teammate." All of the sessions were designed to help the High School athlete begin to prepare for the transition to college soccer. We as a program always look forward to this event as it's is a fun, personal, and competitive soccer environment and this year was no different. It was a great weekend for soccer and we hope each of the players took home a great experience!

Up next, 13 High School teams across the state will be traveling to Ada to take part in the annual 8v8 Summer Shootout this Saturday. Each team will play in four 35 minute games that will take place on the campus of ONU. The shootout is a great opportunity for High School Teams to get competitive playing experience in preparation for their fall schedule. We are looking forward to another great weekend of soccer here at ONU!

End of the Year Honors

On Monday May 16th, Senior Chelsea Albert was recognized as the female ONU representative for the Clyde Lamb Award. Ten male and ten female student-athletes representing each OAC school are chosen each year in honor of the man who organized the Department of Health and Physical Education at Ohio Northern in 1929. He served as coach, department chairman and athletics director at ONU from 1929-64. Criteria for the award include at least two years of participation in an OAC-sponsored sport, senior status, a minimum grade point average of 3.00 and sportsmanlike conduct that has brought credit to the athlete and the institution. As the first All American in program history, Chelsea's numerous accomplishments on the field over the past four years more than qualified her to receive this prestigious award, especially when coupled with her strong academic achievements. Carrying a 3.85 GPA as a Business Marketing major, Chelsea has set a tremendous example for current and future Polar Bears both on and off the field.

In addition to the Clyde Lamb award, earlier this month Chelsea was also named as the 2011 Female Athlete of the Year at ONU. The award named for Helen Ludwig was given out at Honors day and goes to a senior athlete that has made significant accomplishments during their time at ONU. Congratulations to Chelsea on a tremendous career at ONU. She along with fellow senior and Marketing major Natalie White will be crossing the stage as graduates this Sunday at ONU's commencement ceremonies. Congratulations to the both of you! Also, fellow senior MaryAnne Ventura will be back with the Polar Bears this time joining the coaching staff next season as she continues her 5th year in the Raabe college of Pharmacy! A BIG thanks and congratulations to all three of our seniors as they take the next step in their lives. We wish you the very best of luck in your future endeavors and look forward to seeing you all at the Alumni game! :)

Alumni Game 2011!

Save the Date for one of the highlights of the season! Saturday August 27th is set for our annual Alumni Game! To get more Alumni out from hibernation, the format will change a little from previous years. This year, we will have an Alumni Only game (8 v 8, half field), an Alumni v ONU Game (11 v 11, full field), and an ONU Black v Orange game (11 v 11, full field). This will be a great opportunity to take on your old teammates and get some kicks in on the new kids! Last year we were fortunate enough to hold the post game reception at the Alumni house and we look forward to seeing you all there following the game!

We are anticipating another great year for ONU Women’s Soccer with a large part of our squad returning to action. We also have some great events planned for you and the rest of the Women’s Soccer Alumni. We hope to see you in 2011!

All Ohio Awards

As February sets in, the post season honors continue to roll in for the Polar Bears. Recently the All Ohio and Academic All Ohio awards were announced and a few familiar names were on the lists. Adding to her long list of achievements was Senior Chelsea Albert who was named First Team All Ohio and First Team Academic All Ohio. This is the second consecutive year that Albert has earned both awards.

Also enjoying double honors was sophomore Tara Tokar who was named First Team Academic All Ohio and Second Team All Ohio. Earlier this year, Tokar was also honored as a First Team All OAC and an All Region recipient.

Joining in the Academic honors was Senior Natalie White and Sophomore Paige Garber. Both White and Garber were named Third Team Academic All Ohio. This marks the second consecutive Academic award for White as she was an Academic All OAC honoree in 2009. This is Garber's first post season honor as a Polar Bear.

Congratulations to all of the honorees!

All American Luncheon

This past weekend the NSCAA Convention was held in Baltimore. One of the major highlights of the annual convention is the All American luncheon where hundreds of youth, High School, and Collegiate Scholar and Athletic All Americans are honored. Almost 1,400 in attendance were there to honor those that displayed academic and athletic excellence during the 2010 season. For the first time in program history, ONU had one of our own to honor. Senior Chelsea Albert attended the ceremony to receive her All American Honor. In addition, the ONU coaching staff as well as Chelsea's parents were there to add to the celebration.

After an exciting highlight video and enjoying some delicious Maryland crab cakes, the ceremony got underway by awarding an honorary All America to the son of Joe Gaetjens, the legendary member of the 1950 US World Cup team that scored the winning goal which defeated England. After the presentation, the award ceremony which lasted just under 3 hours got underway with each honoree being called across the stage to recognize their achievement. Toward the tail end of the ceremony, Chelsea finally got her moment standing alongside the other members of the Division III All American team. In what was surely a memorable moment for Chelsea, it was also a proud moment for the entire ONU Women's Soccer Program. Congratulations again to Chelsea for her hard work and dedication that lead to this prestigious award. This award is not only honoring Chelsea, but it also is a reflection of the team members past and present that ONU is continually proud of.

Upcoming Events!

With the new year beginning, there are many exciting events to come for ONU Women's Soccer. First up, this Saturday is the ONU Player clinic. Hosted in the King Horn Sports Center, the clinic features technical, and tactical training as well as classroom sessions from the ONU coaching staff. Members of our current team will also be on hand for all sessions including a Q & A session for all camp attendees. The player clinic is a great way for players to interact with current ONU team members and coaching staff while receiving specialized instruction to improve their game.

Moving ahead to warmer weather, there are two summer events to put on the calendar. June 17th-19th is the High School Girls Individual Camp hosted at ONU. Technical and tactical field instruction and specialized goal keeper training will be provided by the ONU coaching staff. In addition to field sessions, classroom sessions will also be included for the players to educate them on what to expect as a collegiate athlete. The camp is centered around helping players receive instruction and education to take their game to the next level.

The following weekend, the 3rd Annual 8v8 Shootout will be taking place on June 25th. The Tournament features a minimum of 4 games that will take place on the ONU game and training fields. In addition to fun and competitive games, the event also is a great team building experience. To avoid using "coaching days" for HS coaches, current ONU players will be on hand to coach the teams throughout the tournament. Overall the 8v8 Shootout is a great way to jumpstart the fall season.

The clip we are sharing is from an indoor training session earlier this fall. After a nice recovery and agility session on the indoor track, we decided to play some dodgeball. The clip demonstrates what happens when you have an indoor training session at the end of the season with a team that has minimal hand eye coordination. Chelsea Albert; NCAA All American!

For the first time in program history a member of the ONU Women's soccer team has been selected as an All American! Senior co-captain Chelsea Albert was selected as a third team 2010 NSCAA Division III All American! Earlier this season, Albert was also earned first team All Great Lakes Region honors as well as first team All OAC. In addition to her athletic accomplishments, Albert also earned second team Academic All District honors and Academic First Team All OAC honors. During her career at ONU, Albert started in 72 of 81 games played. The two year co-captain began her career in the midfield and transitioned to the Polar Bear back line for the 2010 season. During her four years, she scored 45 points on 17 goals and 12 assists. Congratulations to Chelsea on this history making accomplishment!

2010 Awards Banquet

Thanks to everyone who attended the end of the season awards banquet this past Saturday. The banquet is always a great opportunity to reflect upon and highlight the successes of the team throughout the season. In addition to the highlights, individual awards were also handed out. Our Most Valuable Offensive player award went to freshman Sami Atkinson. Atkinson lead the OAC in overall points scored and was honored as Forward of the year by the OAC. Atkinson also received the Newcomer of the Year award. Earning the Most Valuable Defensive player award was sophomore Paige Garber. Garber was an anchor in the polar bear back line that allowed only 16 goals on the season. Earning the Most Improved award was sophomore Erin Waehner. In goal, Waehner was second in the OAC with a goals against average of .64 and a save percentage of .836%. Senior co-captain MaryAnne Ventura earned the Coach's Award for her overall efforts and commitment during her time as a Polar Bear. Senior co-captain Chelsea Albert was awarded Most Valuable Player for her contributions on the field. In addition to her solid defensive play, Albert also contributed 3 goals and 5 assists for 11 points on the season. Albert was also recently named to the First Team All Great Lakes Region team. Sophomore Tara Tokar also earned Second Team All Great Lakes Region honors. Tokar also rounded out the awards for the afternoon as her goal against Wilmington College was named Goal of the Year.

The banquet was capped off by the senior wills where everything from old jerseys, subscriptions to people magazine, and cans of Pringles were willed down to the underclassmen. Overall, the event was a great way to honor and give thanks to everyone who contributed to the successes on and off the field. As we close the chapter on the 2010 season, we look forward to an exciting 2011 season of Polar Bear soccer!

Post Season Awards

The 2010 season was quite a success on and off the field for the Polar Bears, as the OAC has awarded all conference honors to 5 individual players.

Receiving first team awards were senior captain Chelsea Albert, sophomore Tara Tokar, and freshman Sami Atkinson. This is Albert's second all conference award. In 2009, she was selected second team All OAC. In her senior season, Albert was an integral part in the overall success of the Northern defense in addition to contributing 3 goals and 5 assists on the season. This is the first all conference recognition for Tokar. Starting in every game for the Polar Bears, Tokar's solid presence in the midfield earned a total of 10 points from 5 goals on the season. Also earning all conference awards for the first time was Sami Atkinson. Leading the Polar Bears and the conference in overall points scored with a total of 25 from 11 goals and 3 assists. As a result of her strong contributions, Atkinson was also recognized as Forward of the Year for the OAC.

Earning second team recognition was junior Alyssa Merrick. Overall, Merrick contributed 14 points from 5 goals and 6 assists to earn her first all conference award.

Honorable mention was also awarded to sophomore goal keeper Erin Waehner. In goal, Waehner earned 3 shutouts and 51 saves for the Polar Bears.

In addition to their contributions on the field, Chelsea Albert and Natalie White were selected as Academic All OAC recipients. In 2009, White also earned honorable mention academic All OAC recognition while Albert was selected as an Academic All OAC recipient. Earlier, Albert was also awarded second team Academic All District. As a sophomore she was also named honorable mention Academic All OAC.

Further demonstrating their athletic and academic strength, the Polar Bears recorded the highest overall team GPA in the last 7 years, with just under a 3.5!

Congratulations to our entire Polar Bear squad! Individual awards are a great reflection of team performance. Thanks to all who supported and followed us this season. ONU vs. Otterbein; OAC Finals

The OAC finals match on Saturday saw the Polar Bears take the #3 ranked Cardinals into overtime for the second time this season. However, again it was not meant to be as Otterbein would find the game winner in the third minute of overtime to end the match.

The first half began with the Cardinals finding some early looks in the Northern defensive end, but strong overall play from the Polar Bear back four would keep Otterbein off the scoreboard. As the half wore on ONU would push forward to try to find the first goal of the match. Freshman Sami Atkinson would come close after getting on the end of a corner delivered by junior Alyssa Merrick but her attempt on goal would be saved off the line. The game would remain scoreless into half time.

With the sound of the whistle to begin the second half, the Polar Bears picked up the pressure on the entire Cardinal squad. The ONU midfielders and back four made their presence known by challenging for and winning almost every 50/50 ball. Similarly, the ONU offense did not let up either as they would out shoot Otterbein and hold the edge in corner kicks in the second half. Despite momentum being on their side a goal was not to be found in regulation.

Once again the game would be decided in overtime. The Polar bears would start the overtime period well by holding the majority of ball possession. However, just a few minutes in overtime Otterbein would earn a corner to set up the eventual game winner. With the loss, Northern ends their season at 13-6-1 as OAC Tournament runners up.

Despite the season ending with a tough loss, there are many reasons to be proud to be a Polar Bear! Thank you to the family, friends, and fans that have given their tremendous support this year!

ONU vs. Capital; OAC Semifinal

The Polar Bears have advanced to the OAC finals! In exciting fashion, ONU earned a
2-1 double overtime win over #3 seed Capital and a spot in the final this Saturday!

Eager to make their 2010 tournament debut, the Polar bears came out of the gates and kept the Crusaders on their heels for much of the first half. In the 21st minute Junior Kim McGowan would get the scoring started for the Polar Bears off of an assist from Freshman Sami Atkinson. McGowan started the play by winning the ball at the top of the 18 and laying off a pass to Atkinson who would take her defender to the touch line and play a cross back to McGowan to put ONU up 1-0. Northern continued to possess the ball in the Capital defensive end and created many dangerous scoring opportunities for the reaminder of the first half.

Not ready for their season to be over, the Crusaders would step up the pressure in the second half. Brilliant saves from sophomore keeper Erin Waehner would keep Capital off of the scoreboard. However, in the 83rd minute Capital would find their equalizer and force the match into overtime. Despite both teams creating scoring chances, neither would find the game winner in the first overtime. Again, the Polar Bears would keep the pressure on the Crusaders in the second overtime. With less than 2 minutes to go, McGowan would again win the ball in the midfield to begin the play. Freshman classmates Abbie Schauble, Lauren Brown, and Sami Atkinson would build the ball up through the middle to find McGowan who would collect the ball and send a shot toward the Crusader goal for the game winner!

With the win, the Polar bears will travel to Westerville to take on #1 seed Otterbein this Saturday at 2pm. The winner will be awarded the OAC tournament championship and the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

ONU vs. Marietta

The Polar Bears secured the second seed in the OAC tournament last weekend when they defeated the visiting Pioneers from Marietta College. With the win, ONU finished the regular season at 12-5-1 overall and 7-1-1 in conference.

Despite taking 11 shots in the first half, the Polar Bears were unable to find the back of the net. The score would remain at a stalemate up until the 53 minute when senior Natalie White would collect a rebound inside the box to score her third goal of the season. With the score notched at 1-0, the Polar Bears did not let up as they continued to pressure and hold the run of play in the Pioneer defensive end. With just over 20 minutes to go in the game, freshman Danielle Ho would head a crossed ball to classmate Sandy Plunkett who headed in her second goal of the season to finish the scoring at 2-0. In dominating fashion the Polar Bear defense allowed only 2 shots while the offense took a total of 23 shots and 14 corners. Sophomore keeper Erin Waehner started the match and earned one save while junior Kristen DeWees finished the match and also notched one save.

The Polar Bears will make their tournament debut Wednesday when they host #3 seed Capital at 2pm in the OAC Semifinals. Earlier in the season, ONU earned a come from behind 2-1 road win in a tough battle with the Crusaders. In other Semifinal action on Wednesday, #1 seed Otterbein will host #5 Wilmington. Winners of the semifinal matches will earn a spot in the conference final that will be held Nov. 6th at the highest remaining seeded team location.

Why did you choose ONU?
I chose ONU because of the number of students. I love being able to walk to class and say hi to a few people on the way because it is a small campus. Here, I'm a student not a statistic and I know all of my professors are invested in the success of their students.

What is your most memorable moment @ ONU so far?
My most memorable at ONU so far was beating Capital because there was so much positive energy on the bench and on the field. Nothing can top the feeling of accomplishment shared among teammates.

What is your favorite thing about ONU soccer?
My favorite thing about ONU soccer is the way we become so close during the first few weeks of preseason and then support each other like a family throughout the rest of the year. Whether its pertaining to soccer, a class, or some other issue, I know that all of my teammates are there for me if I'm having a problem with something.

Where would you like to be in 5 years?
Working as a traveling nurse somewhere south.

What is your favorite sport, other than soccer?
FOOTBALL!!!!

What word describes you the best?
Goofy

Who on the team would you take with you on a cross country road trip? Why?
Erin Waehner. (we actually have one planned already) But I'd pick her because she would remember the map and we can talk about nothing for hours on end... instant entertainment.

What food couldn’t you live without?

Why did you choose ONU?
I chose ONU because I wanted a small school and it had a nursing program where I could begin classes my freshman year. Soccer was also big part of my college decision and ONU has a really talented team, great coaches, and an awesome group of girls.

What is your most memorable moment @ ONU so far?
Watching the loser of citrus

What is your favorite thing about ONU soccer?
The Team. The girls are like family. They’re absolutely hilarious, but know when to get serious and get the job done.

Where would you like to be in 5 years?
At a graduate school for nursing studying either neonatal nursing or surgical nursing and also assistant coaching girls soccer at my former high school.

What is your favorite sport, other than soccer?
To watch, hockey and football. To play, basketball, but I’m not very good

What would you do if you won the lottery?
Payoff college for me, my brother, and sister. Then give my family and friends amazing Christmas presents!

I’m a triplet, my brother goes to Marquette University and my sister goes to Saint Louis University.

ONU vs. Heidelberg

The Polar bears earned their 6th conference victory Tuesday evening as they battled the Student Princes through double overtime to win 2-1. This marks the third game in a row that has needed extra time and the second game in a row that the Polar Bears have earned the win. Last night's contest with Heidelberg also marked the second overtime game winning goal scored by freshman Sami Atkinson. Atkinson would also score the first goal for ONU in the 34th minute off of a free kick by senior Chelsea Albert. Freshman Sandy Plunkett would also be credited with the assist of Atkinson's goal which tied the score at 1-1 after the 'berg opened scoring in the 28th minute.

The Polar Bears continued to move the ball and pressure the Heidelberg defense throughout the entire second half. Solid play from the ONU defense would keep the 'berg at bay and force the game into overtime. ONU battled through the first overtime creating dangerous scoring chances and tallying 4 shots on goal. Again, the Polar Bears kept up the intensity in the second overtime and as the clock was winding down Junior Alyssa Merrick stepped up to take a corner kick for the Polar Bears. Atkinson would find the ball on the far post, curl it back toward the goal, and would then force the ball over the line to seal the Northern victory. With the win, ONU remains at second place as they approach the final regular season game this Friday when they host Marietta College. Friday's 4pm match also celebrates senior day as seniors Chelsea Albert, MaryAnne Ventura, and Natalie White will be honored for the Polar Bears.

Why did you choose ONU?
I chose ONU because it had everything I wanted: pharmacy, a small school, and soccer. I could be in a professional program that is highly reputable, a small school so that professors would know who I am, and a soccer team that I could play with and enjoy. ONU was the perfect fit for me.

What is your most memorable moment @ ONU so far?
Going to the NCAA tournament last year

What is your favorite thing about ONU soccer?
Teammates. I would never have had the college experience I’ve had without them; they have become a second family at ONU.

Why did you choose ONU?
I chose ONU for the Athletic Training program, but the campus and the soccer team are two amazing bonuses.

What is your most memorable moment at ONU?
I would say my most memorable moment so far is when we made it to the NCAAs. When we found out we ran through the dorms screaming that we made it to everyone.

What is your favorite thing about ONU soccer?
My favorite thing is having the weirdest team. Which, in turn, make soccer season the best time of the school year.

Where would you like to be in 5 years?
I would like to either be in graduate school for Athletic Training, or have a job in Athletic Training that will help pay for grad. school.

Who on the team would you take with you on a cross country road trip? Why?
Most players on the team would not find this surprising, but I would take Molly Kulp. She has become my best friend here at ONU, and it doesn’t look like that's going to change anytime soon.

What food couldn't you live without?
I absolutely love mashed potatoes and Macaroni & cheese! Especially when they are mixed together!

Stuck on a deserted island, what three things would you take?
Granted there was some kind of service, I would take my cell phone; to get myself off of course. I would bring my sketch book. I like to draw when I just need to think. I would bring clothes of some sort. Because, well face it, no one wants to make clothes out of a forest.

Unapologize by Carrie Underwood. She is an amazing singer and her music is easy to love.

ONU vs. John Carroll

The Ohio Northern Women's soccer team took sole possession of second place in the OAC with a 2-1 overtime win against John Carroll. Heading into the Saturday match up, the Blue Streaks had taken over the second spot after the Polar Bears battled to a tie with Wilmington earlier last week which took them to third place. With the post season quickly approaching, every game is critical and every team is battling for positioning. Knowing the importance of the game, the Polar Bears started with high pressure on the JCU defense in the first half. With ten minutes to go until halftime, freshman Abbie Schauble would step up to take a corner kick for the Polar Bears. Schauble's curling corner would sneak through the JCU keeper's hands and just over the line to give ONU the 1-0 lead going into halftime! In the second half, the Blue Streaks would not give up without a fight. Fifteen minutes into the half, JCU would score to tie the game and force the second overtime match in one week for ONU. Determined to get the win, the Polar bears attacked the JCU defense from the start and never let up. With almost 5 minutes to go in overtime, freshman Sami Atkinson would collect the ball of a quick throw in from sophomore Nicole Grant at the mid line. Atkinson would beat the JCU defender down the line, cut into the box, and seal the win with a low near post shot! With the win, ONU sits in second place going into the final week of the OAC regular season. Up next, the Polar Bears travel to take on the Student Princes of Heidelberg University this Tuesday at 7pm.

Saturday's game also celebrated Parent's Day at ONU. A BIG thank you goes out to all of the parents, family members, and friends that were able to come to the game. Our Polar Bear family has tremendous fan support and our parents are the foundation of it all. The ONU staff truly appreciates all that you do for your daughters to give them the opportunity to succeed in the classroom and on the field. Thank you for your continued support as we strive for another OAC Championship and a berth into the NCAA tournament. GO BEARS!

ONU Ties Wilmington

The ONU Polar Bears traveled to conference rival Wilmington College on Wednesday night which proved to be another classic match up between the two teams. ONU got the scoring off midway through the first half as Senior Chelsea Albert found Tara Tokar in the box from a free kick about 40 yards from the WC goal. Tokar rose above her defenders and placed a header in the top far corner, beating the WC goal keeper. The Bears would have several great chances later in the half, but the WC defense would hold strong, keeping the score at 1-0 entering halftime. Just over 10 minutes into the second half, WC would equalize on a corner, making the score 1-1. ONU continued to create chance after chance, coming close several times to getting the game winner, but it wasn't meant to be their night, and the game ended in a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes of regulation play and two 10 minute overtime periods. ONU is back in action on Saturday, as they host John Carroll University at 3:30pm in Ada, OH. JCU is currently in sole possession of 2nd place in the OAC with a record of 5-1 while ONU sits just behind them with a record of 4-1-1. With a win on Saturday, ONU could jump over JCU for second place, securing the all important first round bye in the upcoming OAC Tournament. Saturday also marks Parent's Day for our women's soccer team. We will have a brief ceremony honoring the parents who make it all possible for us just before the game. ONU vs. Baldwin Wallace

The Polar Bears earned their 4th conference win this past Saturday at Baldwin Wallace College. With the win, ONU improves to 4-1 in the OAC and 9-5 on the season. In what was a physical and defensive minded match, Northern looked to capitalize on their offensive attacks. However, the Yellow Jackets would hold strong for much of the first half. In the 29th minute, Junior Alyssa Merrick would step up to take a corner kick earned by the ONU offense. Merrick's service would prove to strong for the BW keeper as it would find the far post side netting to put the Polar Bears on the scoreboard.

In the second half, ONU would continue to push for the second goal, but their attempts would be halted by the BW defense. The Northern defense would also have another strong showing as they would earn their 6th shutout of the season. The Polar Bears resume action this Wednesday as they travel to take on the Quakers of Wilmington College.

Why did you choose ONU?
It felt like home when I visited here. The team was successful and fun to be around, and I liked the small school atmosphere. Also, I wanted to go far away from my home in New Palestine, IN—and 3 hours seemed just right when I really thought about it (I know…not that far).

What is your most memorable moment @ ONU so far?
Making it to the NCAA tournament last year and all of our funny/awkward moments we have (and there are a lot!!!).

What is your favorite thing about ONU soccer?
I like being able to compete at a top level with girls who have the passion for soccer even though they don’t get money to play. Division 3 soccer was the best decision I had ever made because of that reason. It’s nice to go out to practice and games and know that everyone on that field is playing mostly for the same reason; they love soccer and the team.

What is your favorite sport, other than soccer?
Football—the Indianapolis Colts, of course!

What word describes you the best?
Determined—I want to achieve the goals in my life and will do anything to get there.

What would you do if you won the lottery?
Take a trip across the world—visit all the places I’ve always wanted to see, pay off student loans, pay my parents back for everything, and put everything else in savings.

What is one surprising fact that not many people know about you?
I was in Show choir in high school and absolutely love to sing and do choreographed dance! (even though I’m really not a good dancer)

What is your favorite Movie?
How to Lose a Guy In 10 days. For some reason it never gets old.

I don’t want to get stuck on an island, I can’t swim!

Why did you choose ONU?
I chose ONU because it was the perfect combination of athletics and academics for me. I could get a Pharmacy degree from a really good program while still being able to participate in the sports I love. It was the best of both worlds for me. Both the pharmacy and soccer programs are very competitive which was important to me because I have such a competitive nature. I can't think of a better place for me to spend six years.

What is your most memorable moment @ ONU so far?
My most memorable moment at ONU so far was making it to the NCAAs. It was so cool to make it there my first year and with the team we had. We worked so hard to make it there and it was awesome to make it. Next time we just need to win the whole thing!!

What is your favorite thing about ONU soccer?
My favorite part of ONU soccer is the team. I love all of my teammates. They are definitely my family away from home. Everyone gets along so well and they keep everything fun.

Where would you like to be in 5 years?
In five years, I will just be graduating! I hope that I will have a pediatric pharmacy residency at a good hospital possibly somewhere warm! In 10 years I would like to have a growing family and to really be settled down somewhere being a successful pharmacist.

What is your favorite sport, other than soccer?
Basketball! I have played it all my life and this year will be the first year I don’t play! I will miss it a lot but hopefully our intramural team will win a ton of games this year!

What is one surprising fact that not many people know about you?
How competitive I actually am with everything! If I lose at anything even like a game of cards I get really mad.

What is your favorite Movie (include movie quote!)
Holiday in the Sun…the Mary-Kate and Ashley movie! It’s my favorite because I was at the Atlantis Resort while it was being a shot and am possibly in a one second clip during a pool scene!

Where would you like to be in 5 years?
In five years I hope to be done with my undergraduate in Pre-medicine. And I would really love to be in a Spanish speaking country doing medical missions work as well as continuing to study for med school.

What would you do if you won the lottery?
If I won the lottery I would take a lot of the money and take trips around the world visiting my friends and doing missions trips. Most of the remaining money I would give to research a cure for Multiple Sclerosis.

What is your favorite Movie (include movie quote!)
My favorite movie is Titanic hands down! I used to watch it multiple times a week and I am completely obsessed with it. Favorite quote from the movie...hmm I don’t know if I can pick one quote, but my favorite scene is when they stand at the front of the ship and kiss for the first time.

What food couldn’t you live without?
I would have to say chocolate, peanut butter, and coffee!

ONU vs. Otterbein

The Polar Bears lost their first conference match yesterday in a hard fought overtime loss to #5 Otterbein University. ONU moves to 3-1 in the OAC and 8-5 on the season. In what was a very direct, back and forth game, both teams had an equal number of scoring opportunities in the first half. Despite an offsides goal called back for the Cardinals and a couple of close calls from ONU the score remained at a stalemate up to halftime. In the second half ONU attempted three shots with one just missing high of the cross bar from freshman Sami Atkinson. The northern defense would continue to frustrate Otterbein for the entire second half. With the score still tied after 90 minutes, overtime would be in order. The entire Polar bear squad would push hard for the game winner for much of the 10 minute overtime. However, with just 26 seconds remaining, luck would fall on the side of the visitors as an own goal from ONU would beat keeper Erin Waehner off of a corner kick. With the loss, ONU moves to second place in the OAC, while Otterbein moves into first. The Polar Bears will look to continue its conference run this Saturday as they travel to take on the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace.

ONU vs. Capital

The Ohio Northern Polar Bears remain undefeated in the OAC after earning a come from behind win at Capital University Saturday afternoon. ONU vs Capital is a fixture that contains a lot of history, which always makes for an emotional and entertaining match. The Polar Bears came to play and got the result they needed in what was a crucial match up in the OAC standings. Much of the first half saw the polar bears controlling the tempo of the game and finding multiple scoring opportunities. However, the crusader defense would deny Northern's attempts on goal. Capital's offense would call on keeper Erin Waehner twice to keep the ball out of the ONU net. However, in the 33rd minute the crusaders would break the tie by converting off of a corner kick. ONU would continue to battle up to halftime where the Crusaders would take in their 1-0 lead.

With fresh energy and drive, the Polar Bears would increase the pressure on the Crusader defense. In the 68th minute, ONU would earn a free kick 25 yards from the Crusader goal. Senior Chelsea Albert decided to take control, and drove the ball just under the crossbar to beat the Capital gk for the equalizing goal! Not content with a tie, and with just over 20 minutes left in the match the Polar bears would continue to push forward and test the entire Capital squad. Finally, in the 77th minute freshman Sandy Plunkett would deliver a ball that would cut through the seams of the Crusader back line to find classmate Sami Atkinson. Atkinson collected the ball like a veteran, took the keeper one on one and placed a cool finish to earn the game winner for the Polar Bears. Overall, ONU would complete a great come from behind win on the road as they look to carry their momentum into their next conference match up. With the win, ONU improves to 8-4 and 3-0 in the OAC. The only other undefeated team in the OAC is upcoming opponent #5 Otterbein University. The Polar Bears host the visiting Cardinals this Tuesday at 4pm in what should be another classic OAC fixture. GO BEARS!

Today on the ONU soccer blog we bring to you some treats from the training ground just to give a taste of a typical pre match session! The first clip features a fast paced and competitive 3v2 continuous game. While the beginning of the clip may not suggest so, and even though the spectators find it highly entertaining, the object of the game is to score rather than drill your teammates with the ball. This quick, high energy competition is a great challenge for everyone and a great way to gear up for a big game. On this particular day, Oranges were victorious over the Blues in the 3v2 competition!

As a result, the Blues would suffer the daunting consequence of butts up. Lucky for them, Oranges were only allowed to shoot with the ever popular and slightly less than accurate toe ball! We'll see who comes out on top next time! Stay tuned!

Meet The Polar Bears; Part 5

Welcome back to the ONU Women's soccer blog. As we enter a new month, we bring you a new edition of Meet The Polar Bears! This week get to know junior Kim McGowan, sophomore Molly Kulp, and freshman Abby Vargo.

This also happens to be homecoming week at ONU. The theme this year is "ONU's got Talent" and leading up to the festivities this weekend, various activities and contests have taken place on campus this week. Our very own MTPB 5th edition feature Molly Kulp took part in the talent show yesterday evening on campus. Fresh off of her strong debut performance on road trip karaoke, Kulp would take second place singing a Taylor Swift song. Considered the songbird of her generation by those who have heard her sing, Kulp's performance was second to none according to the ONU soccer family! Congratulations Molly!

Kim McGowan, #3, Cincinnati, OH
Why did you choose ONU?

In high school I made the decision that I wanted to continue playing multiple sports in college and division three is where it could be made possible. I also wanted to stay close in Ohio because having my parents at my games is important to me. I looked at schools with my major and then looked at the athletic program each school had. I came to Ohio Northern as my definite decision in the spring of senior year.

What is your most memorable moment @ ONU so far?
My favorite college experience hasn’t necessarily been at ONU. I went to Australia the spring quarter of my sophomore year and it is the best decision I have ever made.

What is your favorite thing about ONU soccer?
My favorite thing about ONU soccer is being able to compete against good teams, and usually win.

Where would you like to be in 5 years?
Hopefully with a masters degree and my own collegiate soccer team that I’m the head coach.

What is your favorite sport, other than soccer?
Basketball by far is my favorite sport. I like the intensity of it and its quick pace change.

What word describes you the best?
Social

What would you do if you won the lottery?
Give all the money to my Dad. He would know what to do with it ten times more that I would. Plus I might owe him a couple of bucks.

What is one surprising fact that not many people know about you?
I’ve gotten a hole in one in golf.

What is your favorite Movie (include movie quote!)
I like to picture Jesus in a tuxedo T-Shirt because it says I want to be formal, but I'm here to party.

Who on the team would you take with you on a cross country road trip? Why?
Paige Garber is a high candidate because I know I’d be laughing the whole time and plus we have the same starting point, Cincinnati. However, if we didn’t need to come back I’d go with Chelsea Chadwick. I just have a feeling that we might get lost once or twice.

What would the title of your autobiography be?
I don’t have a big ego; I just love how awesome I am. Or a close second would be …. 3 life necessities: Sports, Smack Talking and Looking Good.

What food couldn’t you live without?
POPSICLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm just going to hope that I never get stuck on a deserted island.

Why did you choose ONU?
I’ve been familiar with ONU for a long time. I first saw the campus in eighth grade when my older brother looked to go here, and then I came to ONU with my high school soccer team every summer throughout my four years of high school. I never thought I would go to ONU until I began visiting other colleges and realized none compared to what ONU had to offer me. Plus, I loved the sense of “feeling at home” I felt whenever I visited campus.

What is your most memorable moment @ ONU so far?
My most memorable moment at ONU so far was my entire freshman year altogether, because it was full of so many brand new experiences: truly being on my own without my parents, more challenging schoolwork, being a college athlete, and meeting so many new and interesting people. All of these things created a busy and very exciting first year of college for me.

What is your favorite thing about ONU soccer?
I love the professionalism of the ONU Women’s Soccer program. From the way we dress and travel in public, to the way we practice on the field, it is always organized in a professional manner. I think it’s a great way to promote hard work at practice and a winning attitude in games.

What is your favorite sport, other than soccer?
My favorite sport other than soccer is competitive cheerleading—where you actually do flips and tumble and throw people in the air. Yes, I do think competitive cheerleading is a sport and I used to do it when I was younger. When I did soccer AND competitive cheerleading in high school I was in the best shape of my life!

What would the title of your autobiography be?

ONU vs. Manchester

The Polar Bears wrapped up their non conference schedule with a 4-1 win against the Spartans of Manchester College Tuesday evening in North Manchester, Indiana. With the win, ONU improves to 7-4 on the season.

The Polar Bears would create a handful of dangerous scoring opportunities, however strong goalkeeping from Spartan keeper Abby Williams would keep the game scoreless for much of the first half. Junior Kim McGowan would break the tie by scoring an unassisted goal in the 33rd minute and take the 1-0 lead into halftime. Again, ONU would start the half by keeping the pressure on the Spartan defense. Senior Chelsea Albert would add to the score sheet by launching a free kick that would sneak over William's hands and under the cross bar in the 57th minute to double the Northern lead. Manchester's Olivia Gomez would tally one for the Spartans almost ten minutes later by converting a well placed free kick from just outside the ONU 18yd box. The Polar Bears weren't finished scoring either, as freshman Colleen Kerger would earn her first collegiate goal off of an assist from classmate Danielle Ho. To cap off the game, junior Alyssa Merrick would convert a free kick of her own by finding the far post upper 90 in the 85th minute. In a strong showing, the ONU defense would allow only three shots for keeper Erin Waehner.

Up next, the Polar Bears travel to take on the Capital Crusaders in an OAC showdown this Saturday in Bexley, Ohio. Go Bears!

ONU vs. Mount Union

This weekend the Polar Bears improved to 2-0 in the OAC after defeating
the visiting Purple Raiders of Mount Union. ONU wasted no time in
starting the home conference opener up by scoring just :22 seconds into
the match. Senior Natalie White got on the end of a nicely placed
through ball from freshman Sandy Plunkett to open up the scoring and set
the tone for the match. The senior freshman duo would combine again for
the second goal of the game just ten minutes later when White placed a
cross off of the end line for Plunkett to place into the net for her
first collegiate goal. The Polar Bears would continue to pressure the
entire Mount Union squad up to half time where they would take in their
2-0 lead. The offensive attack would continue in the second half where
ONU would again strike early. Plunkett would earn her second assist of
the match as she set up classmate Sami Atkinson in the 48th minute. The
purple raiders would suffer an own goal as a missed clearance off a shot
from Natalie White hit the back of the net to make the score 4-0. One
minute later sophomore Tara Tokar would send in an unassisted long range
shot to cap off the scoring for the game.

Overall, the Polar bears would out shoot the purple raiders 23-7 in what
was a dominating offensive team effort. The ONU defense also had a stellar
showing, allowing only one shot on goal for keeper Erin Waehner, to seal
the team's fifth shutout of the season. With the win ONU improves to 6-4
on the season. Up next, the Polar Bears travel to take on the Spartans
of Manchester College in the last non conference match of the 2010
season.

The ONU Women's soccer program would also like to thank all those who
took part in the Kicks for a Cause fundraiser. Despite the rain, we had
generous support from friends, family and all those in attendance of the
match. Our efforts were able to raise $350 to go toward the Susan G.
Komen for the Cure fight against breast cancer. Thank you again for
supporting Kicks for a Cause!

ONU vs. Denison

Despite a hard fought battle, the ONU Women's soccer team fell to the Big Red of Denison University. The Polar Bear defense was able to withstand early pressure from Denison in the first half with keeper Erin Waehner making some key saves for the bears. On the other side of the ball, freshman Sandy Plunkett and Sami Atkinson each had dangerous scoring opportunities but were unable to find the back of the net. Both teams would continue to test one another up to halftime. During the second half the Polar bears turned up the pressure in the Denison defensive third. Five shots on goal including a header from sophomore Tara Tokar that narrowly missed the upper 90 kept the Big Red on their heels. Despite a strong team defensive effort, Denison was able to find the back of the net twice late in the second half. With the loss ONU goes to 5-4 on the season.

Up next, the Polar Bears host Mount Union in their first home conference match up. Saturday will feature a double header at ONU with the Women playing at 1pm and the Men at 3:30. The women will also be hosting the Kicks for a Cause fundraiser for breast cancer awareness. In addition to donations at the gate, fans in attendance will have the opportunity to purchase time segments of the game. If a goal is scored during the time segment, a prize is awarded! All proceeds will go toward the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization for the fight against breast cancer. Please come out Saturday to support ONU soccer and Kicks for a Cause!

Chelsea Albert, #5, Plain City, OH
Why did you choose ONU?
I chose ONU because I really liked the soccer girls and the success of the team. I also loved the campus and it’s a very prestigious university.

What is your most memorable moment @ ONU so far?
Going to NCAAs last year was unbelievable. To be a part of the program’s first trip ever to Nationals was unforgettable. It was a really great sense of accomplishment and I’m excited to see us get back there this year for my senior season!

What is your favorite thing about ONU soccer?
These girls are my second family. I love every single one of them. We have so much fun together and know how to laugh and enjoy ourselves while still working hard. It’s unique to find a team with as good of team chemistry as we have here at ONU =)

Where would you like to be in 5 years?
Have my doctorate in Physical Therapy and working as a PT either at a children’s hospital or at an outpatient sports clinic. I also want to travel overseas to do mission work in underdeveloped countries.

What is your favorite sport, other than soccer?
Basketball. My dad coached for pretty much my entire childhood so I’ve grown up playing.

What is one surprising fact that not many people know about you?
I used to be really into dancing. I did tap, jazz, ballet and acro. I really want to take a hip-hop class!

What is your favorite Movie?
The Hangover
"Is this the real Caesar’s Palace? Didn’t think so."

What food couldn’t you live without?
M&M McFlurries. Single greatest creation ever.

Why did you choose ONU?
I chose ONU because it was a place where I could pursue my major and still be able to play soccer with a group of girls who are passionate about the sport!

What is your most memorable moment @ ONU so far?
Oh, so many memories after only one year, but I would have to say…sitting in my dorm room and hearing a HERD of screaming yelling girls coming running down the hallway and coming into my room shouting that we got into NCAAs for the first time!

What is your favorite thing about ONU soccer?
Our ability to get the job done, but still have fun! The team chemistry is a definite plus! And listening to Paige and Chad’s stories!

Where would you like to be in 5 years?
I would like to be in medical school. Preferably somewhere OUT of ohio! (If only Warwick castle had a med school! Haha.)

What is one surprising fact that not many people know about you?
I danced tap, jazz, and ballet for twelve years prior to coming to college!

What food couldn’t you live without?
PEANUT BUTTER! Without a doubt!

Why did you choose ONU?
I chose ONU because it was a smaller school that had great academics and also I wanted to play soccer.

What is your most memorable moment @ ONU so far?
It has to be the time on the bus when I had to sing karaoke and apparently I sounded like a man but I had fun with it.

What is your favorite thing about ONU soccer?
My favorite thing is the team itself. Everyone on the team gets along and I enjoy being around them. We always seem to have fun when we are together.

I’m tall, just kidding, but I’m really shy when you first meet me but I will start to let loose once I feel comfortable around you.

ONU vs. Muskingum

The Polar Bears opened up with their first OAC game this past Saturday when they traveled to New Concord Ohio to take on Muskingum University. ONU started conference play with a strong statement with 6 different polar bears finding the back of the net. Scoring first off the assist from senior Chelsea Albert was freshman Sami Atkinson in the fourth minute. Freshman Lauren Brown would also joining the scoring effort off of a cross from senior Natalie White in the 10th minute. Albert would close out the half by floating a free kick in the 25th minute. Two minutes into the second half the freshman duo of Sara Rutherford and Danielle Ho would combine to tally the fourth goal of the afternoon. Adding to the scoring efforts were junior Alyssa Merrick in the 48th minute and senior Natalie White in the 61st minute. Assisting on the final two goals was freshman Lauren Brown. In an impressive defensive effort the polar bears allowed a single shot to earn the fourth shut out of the season. Overall an overpowering performance from the Polar Bears earned them their first conference win to improve the record to 5-3 on the season. Up next, ONU travels to Granville this Wednesday to take on the Big Red of Denison University.

Way to many memorable moments to choose from… but being the champion of Fun Thursdays at soccer practice and winning a steak last spring, the one time the power went out in the locker room because it was storming and we were waiting to practice and we played the vegetable game “squash squash” haha, and getting inducted into tri-beta are definitely in my top 10.

THE TEAM the girls are absolutely positively wonderful and I love them all.

At UNC IN MEDICAL SCHOOL in my third year!

I play the ukulele!! But lots of people know that about me now so I guess if that is not surprising enough another fact is my favorite animal is a frog I did a report on them in the fourth grade.

Why did you choose ONU?
I primarily chose ONU because of the highly accredited pharmacy school and its successful soccer program. ONU has the best balance between the two and after I met the girls on the team, my decision was fairly easy. Plus it’s the perfect distance from home!

What is your most memorable moment @ ONU so far?
Making it to the NCAAs last season was definitely one of the best moments our team experienced. Hopefully they’ll be seeing us again this season!

What is your favorite thing about ONU soccer?
It’s a combination of the hilarious personalities that we have on the team, as well as the passion we all share for the game. Soccer cannot be any more enjoyable when you’re with teammates that not only care about winning, but also care about the well-being of each individual.

ONU vs. Mount St. Joseph

Tuesday evening featured the Polar Bears second southern road trip in four days to take on the Lions of Mount St. Joseph. Eager to make an impact, the Polar bears wasted no time in finding the back of the net. It took less than two minutes for freshman Abbie Schauble to score the first goal for the polar bears off of a well placed cross from senior Natalie White. ONU continued to pressure the Lions back line creating several scoring opportunities. Converting one of those scoring opportunities was sophomore Tara Tokar in the 18th minute off of a free kick taken by junior Alyssa Merrick. The Polar Bears would take their 2-0 lead into halftime. The offensive attack from ONU would continue onto the second half. Adding to the score sheet in the 57th minute was freshman Sami Atkinson who tallyed her fifth goal of the season off of Merrick's fifth assist of the season. Up 3-0 in the second half, the Polar Bears did not let up on the attack. With less than ten minutes to go in the game, junior Kim McGowan got on the end of a ball from sophomore Alicia Palivoda to cap the game at 4-0. Making two saves on the evening, sophomore Erin Waehner would earn the shotout in her first start in goal. Solid overall play from the entire ONU squad on the evening would improve the season record to 4-3-0. A big thank you to the polar bear fans, friends, and family who made it to the game! Up next, the Polar Bears are on the road again to take on their first conference opponent this Saturday at Muskingum University.

ONU vs. Thomas More

Last Saturday the Polar Bears traveled south to take on the Thomas More Saints. ONU had their sights set on handing the Saints their first loss of the season, but it wasn't meant to be. Strong team play and two first half goals were enough to hand the Polar Bears their third loss on the season. The bears were unable to find the back of the net despite many scoring opportunities in the second half. Sophomore Erin Waehner completed 4 saves in her 55 minutes of action. Up next for the bears is another road match this evening at Mount. St. Joseph at 7pm.

So far, the most memorable moment I have is going to the NCAAs for the first time. Everyone was so proud and so excited and it was a great experience. However, I hope that we go much further in the tournament this year!

What is your favorite thing about ONU soccer?
My favorite thing about ONU is my teammates. They push me to get better every day, we have so much fun with one another and we all have the same goals. We are fully committed to the team and want to go as far as we can.

ONU vs. Wittenberg

The Polar Bears lost a hard fought match against the visiting Tigers from Wittenberg yesterday. The home team started the game by providing many offensive threats against the Wittenberg defense. Even play was on display from both teams and despite many scoring opportunities in the first half, the score would remain tied at halftime. The Tigers opened up the scoring in the 63rd minute. They would find the back of net again in the 76th minute to make the score 2-0. The Polar Bears would end the game leading on both shots and corners but failed to capitalize on several scoring opportunities. Up next, the Polar Bears will travel to Thomas More College this Saturday to take on the Saints in another in region match up.

Weekend Update!

This past weekend found the Polar Bears traveling down to Westerville, Ohio for the Otterbein Tournament which featured hosts Otterbein University, a well as St. Mary's College, and Kalamazoo College. The polar bears opening game, and first road game of the season, was against the Kalamazoo Hornets on Friday. K'Zoo provided a tough match up for the polar bears as much of the game saw both teams creating chances. With the game tied at zero at the half, the polar bears looked to start the second half with new intensity. Stepping up across the board, the polar bears picked up the pressure on the hornets defense. In the 58th, freshman Abbie Schauble connected off a cross from Senior Chelsea Albert to net her third goal of the season and the game winner. Junior keeper Kristen DeWees also made four saves to earn the shutout and the first road win for the polar bears.

The weekend continued for ONU with Saturday's contest against St. Mary's (Ind). The polar bears wasted no time by jumping on the scoreboard in the third minute with an unassisted goal from freshman Sami Atkinson. The polar bears continued the to pressure the Belles, out shooting them with 12 shots in the first half. Atkinson would also make her mark early in the second half with another unassisted goal. Strong play from the entire polar bear squad continued throughout the remainder of the game and held the shot advantage to 32-5. The afternoon wasn't over for Atkinson as she completed her first collegiate hat trick in the 53rd minute off of the corner from junior Alyssa Merrick. Keeper Kristen DeWees and an impressive ONU defense sealed the win earning the second shutout of the season. Upon the close of the weekend, ONU improved their record to 3-1-0. The polar bears return to action at home against regional foe Wittenberg, Wednesday at 5pm.

I was looking for a small school where I could study pharmacy and play soccer.. And I found it!

Making it to the NCAA tournament for the first time in ONU Women's Soccer history last season.

What is your favorite thing about ONU soccer?
I love how close our team is. Most of my best friends are my teammates and I know that I can count on them for anything. I also like that we're all really good at catchphrase and charades.

What is your favorite sport, other than soccer?
To play, basketball. To watch, either basketball or football.

What is one surprising fact that not many people know about you?
I was the center on my sixth grade basketball team. And I haven’t grown since then.

Why did you choose ONU?
I love how ONU has small classes because it gives students a chance to become close with their teachers. I also wanted to continue playing soccer because it is my passion and liked the fact that the nursing program is direct acceptance and you don't have to deal with prenursing classes for the first year and then try to get accepted.

What is your most memorable moment at ONU so far?
My most memorable moment this year was going to NCAA's for soccer and beating Capital during the season.

What is your favorite thing about ONU soccer?
I love how close our team has become and the fact that I could go to any teammate for help or support if I needed to.

What food couldn't you live without?
I could not live without ice cream (my favorite kind is moose tracks)!!!!!!!!

What would you do if you won the lottery?
I would pay off school loans, buy a sweet truck and a brand new boat with a wakeboard tower, buy a brand new house, hire a chef to make me delicious treats, buy my own personal jet to travel wherever I want, and pay Lil Wayne to hangout with me for a day!

Why did you choose ONU?
My grandpa was a Polar Bear, and when he showed me around campus for the first time I knew it was the right school for me. I also wanted to play soccer and still get a solid education.

What is your most memorable moment @ ONU so far?
So far my best memory was at recruit night when the entire team played charades. I have never laughed so hard in my life.

What is your favorite thing about ONU soccer?
Even though I haven’t play ONU soccer yet, it seems like everyone is really close and I cannot wait to be a part of the team!

Where would you like to be in 5 years?
In five years I would like to be married and live in a cute little house with a white fence. I would like to work at Nike and design a new line of clothes and shoes.

Opening Weekend!

The 2010 Ohio Northern Women's soccer season is officially open! The polar bears resumed action for the season this past weekend with back to back games against Hope (Mich) and Earlham (Ind). It was a great atmosphere for opening day as parents, friends, and fans packed the stands and sidelines to cheer on the bears. Eager to make their mark this season, the bears got straight to work in the first half beginning with Tara Tokar's unassisted goal in the 17th minute. A hard working Hope squad responded with a goal in the 26th minute to even the score. However, it wouldn't last long as freshman Abbie Schauble responded with her first career goal as a polar bear, assisted by senior Chelsea Albert. The first half also found Tokar netting her second goal of the game off of an assist by Alyssa Merrick, and freshman Sami Atkinson converting a cool penalty kick to tally the score 4-1 at halftime. During halftime the fans were treated to a scrimmage featuring the Ohio Extreme u11 and u12 girls teams on the game field. Once the second half was underway, there was no looking back for the polar bears as junior Alyssa Merrick jumped on the scoring sheet in the 46th minute. Merrick also assisted Schauble's second goal of the afternoon in the 67th minute. Rounding out the scoring for the game was freshman Lauren Brown with just ten minutes left in the match off of an assist from junior Kim McGowan. Overall, opening day was quite a success as the bears looked to set the tone for the 2010 season!

The next day saw the bears face up against the Earlham College Quakers. This hard fought, physical battle featured many scoring opportunities for the polar bears. However, a goal was not to be found for the home team. In the 37th minute the quakers stuck in a scrappy goal off of a free kick in the bears defensive half. Junior keeper Kristen DeWees made the initial save off the line but could not keep the rebound shot from the back of the net. The second half found the bears stepping up the pressure to find the equalizer by out shooting the quakers 14-7 on the game. Unfortunately the game ended, handing the polar bears their first loss of the season. The bears will look to respond this weekend at the Otterbein Tournament as they face off against Kalamazoo (Mich) and St. Mary's (Ind).

While the Polar Bears have returned from their European adventure and are resting up for Pre Season, we thought we would share a couple of game clips from our last two matches overseas. The first clip from the Blackburn Rovers match features a fantastic goal from Natalie White! The second clip is of the match against The Hibernians from Scotland. This was a very hard fought match and this clip demonstrated the skill and speed of play from both teams. Overall, each of the three games were great tests for the Polar Bears as they look to set their sights high for the season!

Last Days of Europe:(

On Sunday morning, we headed from England to SCOTLAND!!!! It was about a 5 hour drive so we stopped at the Manchester United stadium on the way. Going there was such an amazing expereince; the pitch (field) was perfect and the culture and history of the team was so rich. After that, we stopped for lunch at a little place close to the border. We arrived in Edinburgh around 7pm and then we ate dinner at the University of Edinburgh, which was our home for the remainder of the trip. Afterwards, we walked around trying to find the festival everyone was talking about. August is festival month in Scotland and the place is crazy and exciting. After a failed attempt to find it, a few of us decided to head back; however, we encountered a group of Scotsmen playing the bagpipes. They asked us to highland dance and Natalie, Molly and Nicole took them up on the offer. Apparently, Nicole didn't quite live up to the professional highland dancer that went before because she was given the silent treatment by the audience (haha).

The next day, we trained with two Scottish coaches and it was a really fun session. After training, we went to Edinburgh castle where it was absolutely raining cats and dogs. After wandering through the beautiful castle, we hit the streets for some shopping before heading back to get ready for the event of the trip, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo concert. This concert was at night right outside the castle and consisted of bands and militaries from around the world. There was a special emphasis on Scottish music and the bagpipes. It was one of the most amazing things that everyone on the team has every experienced. Even the rain couldn't ruin it!

The next day we had some free time in the morning to go shopping and then we went for a bus tour of Edinburgh. Our tour guide wore a kilt and showed us some of the most historical and infamous parts of the city. The countryside was breathtaking and everyone enjoyed seeing the parks and lochs (lakes)that Scotland has. That night we had our final game against the SCOTTISH PREMIERE LEAGUE TEAM, THE HIBERNIANS, who are in third place in their division. They were by far the best team that we played; they were 20-30 years old who have 5 current national team members and 2 retired members on the team. We went down 1-0 and then game back 1-1 with a chip from Natalie as the keeper was coming off of her line. Then we went down 2-1 and came back to finish the game 2-2. The second goal came from a great pass from Kim and then a back corner finish from Natalie. We played so well together against a very high caliber team. Tying Hibs was definitely one of the main highlights for the team!!!

We left Scotland Wednesday morning at 3 am to begin our long journey back to the states. We are now all sitting in the airport completely exhausted and ready to go home. The trip was so much fun and we wish it didn't have to end but luckily we all have a wonderful, fantastic pre-season to look forward to:)

Thank you to all the parents and supporters we had at each game. The trip was a great bonding experience and we really enjoyed the different cultures. See you all soon!

Europe - Take 2 :)

The morning after our first game versus Lutontown, we had a light training session in Holland Park before departing for Manchester. On the way to our next destination, we stopped to visit Warwick Castle. I don't think any of us knew what to expect on our castle tour but I know that the visit definitely exceeded any expectations I may have had.

Knowing nothing about Warwick Castle or its history, I was expecting for our bus to pull up to ruins of a castle that may have be interesting to walk around for maybe a half hour at most before getting back on the bus and continuing our journey to Manchester. Little did I know, the castle had been preserved extremely well and was present in near entirety. Different areas of the castle were devoted to explaining different aspects of medieval life in vivid detail thanks to extremely entertaining actors who portrayed some of the more famous nobility and their servants. Many of the girls enjoyed a tour which explained different artwork, furniture and quirks of the castle itself as well as another tour which reenacted the way a weekend party for nobility and other upper class citizens would have been held. Some of us were also lucky enough to catch a live jousting match. It was also possible to conduct self-guided walks around the castle grounds which were mapped out contained signs which explained unique areas such as the dungeon, jail and towers. In addition to the historical aspect of the visit, views from some of the upper towers showed the beauty of the surrounding countryside which provided the backdrop for quite a few gorgeous pictures. :)

After eating lunch and exploring a bit more we loaded up the bus again and continued on our way. That evening we checked into the Britannia Country House Hotel where we had dinner and hung out as a team.

On Saturday morning we woke up early for breakfast before departing for our second match of the trip versus the Blackburn Rovers. We arrived to the Rovers beautiful facility in plenty of time to take in the sights and get in a good warm up. Both teams lined up before the game to shake hands and exchange gifts. After a hard fought first half we were up 1-0 thanks to Kim's effort to get on the end of a free kick that was well played by Paige. In the second half, the Rovers came back to tie it up 1-1 before a final goal by Natalie put our Polar Bears ahead 2-1 for the victory. Despite varying weather conditions our girls worked hard for the entire 90 minutes to defeat a very talented Blackburn squad.

We left directly from our game to go and see a Champions League professional soccer game (the league below the EPL). We were seated in the home team's fan section, making us fans for Preston North End. It was really interesting to see the stadium as well as to experience firsthand just how exciting a live professional soccer game can be. I don't think any of us could pick up the words to take part in their cheers but we were all pro's at clapping and yelling along with the rest of the fans anyway. Unfortunately, the home team, Preston North End, fell to Dorchester 2-0 but it was a good game to watch overall; we even got to see someone get a red card!

I know that I can speak for everyone on the team when I say that we are having a fabulous time here in Europe. There's so much to see and learn as well as lots of opportunities for team bonding. :) Tomorrow we plan to visit Manchester United Old Trafford Stadium for a tour on our way to our next destination, Edinburgh, Scotland. Europe Days 1-3 =)

We started our European adventure with a 4 day mini preseason. All the girls reported for training where we had just 4 days to knock the rust off and get ready to play the strong competition we would face in Europe. After a short bus trip to the Detroit airport, we had some difficulty with girls struggling to meet the 50 lb bag limit (cough lindsay cough). After scrambling around and putting random clothing items in a series of other girls' bags, we were all set for our long flight to Paris. During our layover, we were lucky enough to get a day tour of the city. Our Paris tour took us passed all the great landmarks including the Eiffel Tower and the Notre Dame Cathedral. The team had a great time posing for pictures and sampling the authentic French food. Upon returning to the airport, we enjoyed a short flight to London, where the real fun began!

We were picked up at the airport by our fabulous guide Fran and our impressive driver Mark. We checked into our hotel and explored the local area of Kensington before ending the long day of travel. While in London we enjoyed a city bus tour, which was not only entertaining thanks to our humorous tour guide, but it was also extremely informative and helped us all gain our bearings in the foreign territory. All of the girls love London and agree that it has so much energy and the people are really friendly! Some girls chose to attend different plays in London's famous Theater District while others opted for shopping in London's high fashion boutiques.

While in London we played our first match against Oxford United. We won 2-0 in a well fought match against a very talented opponent. The girls from the other team were extremely friendly and very skilled players. We exchanged gifts in the customary way at the beginning of the match. We gave them an ONU pennant and they gave us one of their jerseys.

Tomorrow we continue our European trip and head to Manchester where we will experience new sights to see and another match against Blackburn. The girls are definitely excited to see more of England!!

Welcome to another season of Polar Bear soccer! 2010 finds the bears gearing up for an exciting and memorable start to the season. To kick everything off, the polar bears will be traveling across the pond for a preseason trip to Europe; the team will travel to Paris, London, Manchester, and end the trip in Edinburgh Scotland. While there, the bears will also have the great opportunity to face off against three top notch football clubs. Be sure to stay posted to the blog as it will take you along the trip with the team with daily blog posts and updates. Overall, the team should be in for many memorable experiences both on and off the field!

Upon their return, the bears will begin their traditional preseason training. After quite a successful 2009 season with the first ever appearance in the NCAA tournament in program history, the bears will be eager to get to work with a tough non conference and OAC competition schedule. We hope to have your support at the games this season as the bears look to make another run to the big dance!

This June will mark the 2nd summer the Ohio Northern University Women's Soccer team will be sponsoring a girls HS 8v8 soccer tournament on Saturday, June 26th. Team fee is $225.00 per team which will guarantee your team 4-35 minute games. If you are a HS Coach and do not want to use any of your contact days, a member of our soccer program will coach your team for you. It's a great leadership opportunity for your upperclassmen to prepare their teams for the upcoming fall season!

For the first time ever, the ONU W Soccer Coaching Staff will be hosting a HS Girls Individual Residential Soccer Camp from June 18th-20th. Camp fee is $275.00 per person. Each day will include on field training, classroom discussion, as well as interaction with current members of the polar bears soccer team and staff. ONU Girls High School Player Clinic

The Ohio Northern University soccer staff and team will be hosting their 2nd annual HS Girls Player Clinic on January 9th on the campus of ONU. Over the course of the day, each participant will receive two 1-hour field sessions and two 1-hour classroom sessions. All field and classroom topics are TBD, but popular topics have been "What it means to be a good teammate", "How to win", and "What to expect coming from high school/club to college." It is a great opportunity for anyone to pick up a few things which will help you advance your individual game to the next level. We just wanted to take a minute to thank you all for a fantastic season. We had so much fun competing and playing each week. We would like to personally thank the fans, families, friends, and alumni who supported us and made this season an extremely special one for us. Our fourth straight season of finishing 2nd or higher in the OAC is a great accomplishment, but not to be outdone by our NCAA NATIONAL TOURNAMENT birth is something we will cherish for ever. There is only ONE first time for everything, and you made that possible for us this season. We are losing some great people in our program this year, some people who have given us so many great memories over their careers. We are hopeful we will be able to conitnue the tradition of excellence they've helped us build in the seasons to come. Thank you again for making this season special.

Season Ends in NCAA's

The Ohio Northern University women's soccer season came to an end this past Friday in the first round of the NCAA National Tournament. This is the first time in the history of the program that the Polar Bears were invited to participate in post season play. ONU was beat by Wittenberg University, who then lost in the next round to NCAA host Calvin College. ONU finished the season with an overall record of 15-5-1, a regional ranking of #2, and a national ranking of #19.
"It was a fantastic season", said head coach Mark Batman. "Our seniors are the ones who got us here. I want to thank the entire team for an outstanding season and one to remember. They have set the standard and now know what it takes to get here, so that has now become the expectation for future teams. I'm so proud of this team and what we've accomplished this past season. It makes me excited for the future."

Polar Bears Advance to the OAC Finals

ONU outshot John Carrol by 20 yesterday afternoon in Ada in the OAC Semi Final Tournament. Even though only 1 shot found the back of the net, that's all the Polar Bears needed to advance to the OAC Tournament finals for the third consecutive season. ONU created some very dangerous chances in the first half, but a stubborn defense and good goal keeping kept the score at 0-0. The Polar Bears came out strong in the 2nd half where their hard work and the desire to make the finals paid off. Jamie Eiben flicked a ball to a streaking Kaitlin Sanders just a 1:30 into the half. Sanders beat 2 players and smacked a ball past the JCU goal keeper making the score 1-0. The lone goal was all the Polar Bears needed to win the match and advance to the OAC Tournament Finals. Sophmore GK Kristen Dewees and her defense recorded their 10th shutout on the season, only facing a few shots for 90 minutes.
"What a fantastic team performance today", said ONU Head Coach Mark Batman. "The girls were determined, they didn't get frustrated after creating so many good scoring chances, and they defended extremely well. We are playing very well right now and with a ton of confidence. I think we have a great shot to finally bring home the tournament championship this coming Saturday."
ONU will face Otterbein College on Saturday at 2p in Westerville. Thanks to all who made the trip on Wednesday. We hope to see you all for an exciting rematch with the Cardinals.

ONU Finishes Regular Season With A Win

The Ohio Northern women's soccer team finished their last regular season game this past Friday in Marietta, OH. ONU came out ready to play in the first 15 minutes, getting two goals early to secure the victory against Marietta College. Both goals came from Junior Captain Chelsea Albert. The first came from a free kick taken by Senor Captain Stacy Barnhart just inside ONU's defensive half. Barnhart played a fantastic driven ball into the box where Albert headed the ball past the MC goal keeper. Albert's second goal came just minutes later off another great corner kick from Senior Captain Kaitlin Sanders. She found Albert in the box again unmarked for another header just inside the 6-yard box.
With the win, ONU improves to 14-3-2 overall and 8-1-0 in the OAC. ONU finished in 2nd place in conference play, only 1 point behind Otterbein who took first. ONU secured the 2nd seed in the OAC Tournament while John Carroll finished 3rd, Wilmington 4th, Capital 5th, and Heidelberg 6th. ONU will play the winner of JCU/Heidelberg in the OAC Tournament Semi Final match on Wednesday at 2p in Ada.

ONU Wins on the Road at Wilmington 2-1

The Polar Bears remained one point behind Otterbein College in the last week of OAC action as they beat a very determined Wilmington College soccer team Tuesday night in Wilmington, OH. The first half was a stalemate, with neither team creating any goals from their scoring opportunities. WC had their best chance off a free kick which was redirected at goal, but sophomore goal keeper Kristen Dewees pushed it over the crossbar keeping the game at 0-0. ONU had several good opportunities to take the lead in the first half, but WC's defense held strong and kept the game scoreless going into the half.

The second half started with ONU gaining a corner with just 2 minutes off the clock. Kaitlin Sanders played a great near post ball in towards the WC goal, it passed by a defender and found Lindsay Gilchrist who notched in the first goal of her Polar Bear career. ONU got a second goal as Dewees took a goal kick, which was flicked on by Angie Pisut. That flick found Kaitlin Sanders who then found Jamie Eiben across the midline. Eiben then wieghted a perfect pass to Natalie White splitting the WC defense. She accelerated past the defenders, the gk came out, and White placed the ball over the WC goal keeper making the game 2-0. WC started to apply more pressure, and with about 14 minutes to go in the game, they scored a goal of their own. From that point on, WC threw everything they had at ONU, creating some very good chances, but ONU hung on for the 2-1 win on the road.

"It was a great game for both teams", said head coach Mark Batman. "WC is a very strong opponent, and playing at their place on senior day, brought more emotion to the game for them. They always play a very tough, hard working style of soccer. I felt our players responded to the pressure they were applying and dealt with it extremely well. I am very proud of our players for sticking to our match plan and finding a way to win."

With the win, ONU improves to 13-3-2 overall and 7-1 in the OAC. ONU is currently ranked #3 in the Great Lakes Region and #24 nationally in the latest NSCAA poll. ONU is 1 point behind conference leading Otterbein who still has to play Capital on Saturday. If ONU wins their last game on Friday vs Marietta College and Otterbein ties or loses to Capital on Saturday, ONU will be the 2009 OAC Conference Champions for the 2nd time in 3 seasons.

Hard Fought Game On Senior Day

The #25 nationally ranked Polar Bears lost a hard fought match to the #8 ranked Cardinals from Otterbein College Saturday afternoon on senior day. Both teams entered the match as two of the best teams in the Great Lakes Region (Otterbein at #1, ONU at #3 in the latest NCAA rankings poll). The match got started with ONU dominating most of the play in the first half, creating a few great scoring chances. ONU's best scoring chance came when Junior Natalie White found herself alone in the Otterbein box, but just couldn't convert the scoring opportunity after several attempts. ONU had another great scoring chance off their only corner of the match as Junior Chelsea Albert rose above everyone else, but her header just sailed past the far post. Otterbein's lone goal came in the 2nd half off a defensive breakdown, which found an Otterbein forward on a breakaway for the game winner.
"It was a tough game for the girls", said Head Coach Mark Batman. "Otterbein is a great team and it was a great match. Both teams had great chances to score and it came down to them converting their best chance. We will learn from this game and get better for next week as we have two of the most important games of our season ahead of us. I'm proud that the players realize they can play with the best teams in the country, it just wasn't our day."
For anyone in attendance, they got to witness two great soccer teams play a fantastic 90 minutes. Both teams have a very good chance of getting far into post season play in the NCAA National Tournament. A special thanks to our seniors who played with so much emotion yesterday and for everything you have given to our program in the previous seasons. We are so blessed to have you in our program.
ONU next travels to Wilmington College on Tuesday night for a 7p kickoff. Wilmington sits in 3rd place just behind the Polar Bears, who are now 12-3-2 overall and 6-1 in the OAC. The Quakers are coming off a loss to John Carroll on Saturday night; a team that ONU beat 1-0 earlier in the season. It looks to be a very exciting match on Tuesday for both teams. The Polar Bears of Ohio Northern University claimed sole possession of first place in the OAC with their latest win over Heidelberg 3-0 yesterday afternoon in Ada, OH. Contributing to the scoring were Seniors Angie Pisut, Kaitlin Sanders, and Sophomore Alyssa Merrick. Chelsea Albert and Kaitlin Sanders notched an assist a piece for 2 of the 3 goals. The Polar Bears are now 12-2-2 overall and 6-0-0 in the OAC. Otterbein College is just behind ONU with a conference record of 5-0-1. The Cardinals will be traveling to Ada this Saturday for a 2p kickoff. ONU is #25 in the latest NSCAA Coaches Poll and Otterbein is ranked at #8. Both teams will be playing with something to prove, as the game is just as important for regional play as it is for the conference.
"Heidelberg is a tough team, physical, and play hard. They challenged us offensively, making things difficult for us", said Head Coach Mark Batman. "It was a great game to prepare us for a very tough and talented team on Saturday. The girls have been talking about this game (Otterbein) for months it seems like, and I've trying all I could do to be sure they were taking things one game at a time. I can tell they are anxious to redeem themselves from last season. It's going to be a great game between two very talented teams. Saturday's game is also Senior Day, so there will be some added emotion to an already very big rivalry. I can't wait to watch!"

ONU Wins At John Carroll

The Polar Bears kept their winning ways defeating a very good team this past weekend at Don Shula Stadium in University Heights, OH. JCU came into the game 3-1 in the OAC while ONU entered as one of two undefeated teams with a record of 4-0. The game was a hard fought game by both teams and both teams created some great scoring chances. JCU's main chances came from set pieces in ONU's defensive half; most were direct shots on goal, but Sophmore Goal Keeper Kristin Dewees was up to the challenge, making a few saves look easy. ONU got the games only goal midway through the first half as Jamie Eiben played a great lay off pass to fellow Senior Kaitlin Sanders. Sanders took the one-time opportunity and rifled a ball toward the upper corner of the goal from about 30 yards out. JCU's goal keeper made a fantastic save and knocked the ball down, but right in the path of Angie Pisut, who slotted home the game winner, giving her 14 goals on the season. ONU had several more good chances in the first half but failed to get another goal. The second half started with JCU putting ONU under a ton of pressure, but the Polar Bears handled the storm and calmed down to retake control of the tempo for the remainder of the match. ONU had 2 great chances late in the game to seal the victory but 2 great saves from the JCU goal keeper kept the game at 1-0.

"JCU is a great team. They are extremely hard working, have some great players, and you can really tell they love playing together. Coming here and getting a win was a great test of our program and players. They played through some adversity, handled a lot of pressure, and all grew from this game. We are hoping to continue moving forward this week as we finish our last 2 OAC home games before hitting the road next week to finish conference", said ONU Head Coach Mark Batman.
